ساحل کی تمنّا کون کرے ۔ معین احسن جذبیؔ

مرنے کی دعائیں کیوں مانگوں جینے کی تمنا کون کرے

یہ دنیا ہو یا وہ دنیا اب خواہش دنیا کون کرے

جب کشتی ثابت و سالم تھی ساحل کی تمنا کس کو تھی

اب ایسی شکستہ کشتی پر ساحل کی تمنا کون کرے

جو آگ لگائی تھی تم نے اس کو تو بجھایا اشکوں نے

جو اشکوں نے بھڑکائی ہے اس آگ کو ٹھنڈا کون کرے

داتا ہے بڑا رزّاق مرا، بھرپور خزانے ہیں اُس کے

یہ سچ ہے مگر اے دستِ دعا، ہر روز تقاضا کون کرے

دنیا نے ہمیں چھوڑا جذبیؔ ہم چھوڑ نہ دیں کیوں دنیا کو

دنیا کو سمجھ کر بیٹھے ہیں اب دنیا دنیا کون کرے

साहिल की तमन्ना कौन करे – मोईन एहसन जज़्बी

मरने की दुआएँ क्यूँ माँगूँ जीने की तमन्ना कौन करे

ये दुनिया हो या वो दुनिया अब ख़्वाहिश-ए-दुनिया कौन करे

जब कश्ती साबित-ओ-सालिम थी साहिल की तमन्ना किस को थी

अब ऐसी शिकस्ता कश्ती पर साहिल की तमन्ना कौन करे

जो आग लगाई थी तुम ने उस को तो बुझाया अश्कों ने

जो अश्कों ने भड़काई है उस आग को ठंडा कौन करे

दाता है बढा रज़्ज़ाक़ मेरा, भरपूर ख़ज़ाने हैं उस के

ये सच है मगर अए दस्त-ए दुआ, हर रोज़ तक़ाज़ा कौन करे

दुनिया ने हमें छोढा जज़्बी हम छोढ न दें क्यूँ दुनिया को

दुनिया को समझ कर बैठे हैं अब दुनिया दुनिया कौन करे

Member of the Progressive Writers’ Association. He worked as an assistant editor of ‘aajkal’ of which josh malihabadi was also the chief editor. I am not sure if they overlapped but he was close to majaz, faani, sardar jafri and sibt-e hasan. He did his MA from aligaRh and later joined the faculty teaching there until his retirement. He also completed his PhD while teaching and published several collections of poetry. This Ghazal is dated 1933. In 1939, panDit anand narain mulla composed a Ghazal in the same radeef and qaafiya as well the same theme, paying tribute to jazbi. Some of mulla’s ash’aar are noted under each relevant she’r. Also, there is an icon on the ‘refrain’ to which all Ghazal of the same radeef will be linked.

Conventionally the poet/lover gives up hope of gaining the attention of the beloved and hopes for death at her hands. Here he seems to be utterly hopeless, giving up on both this world and the next. Said panDit anand narain mulla ….
jab dil meN zara bhi aas na ho izhaar-e tamanna kaun kare
armaan kiye dil hi meN fana armaan ko rusva kaun kare

jab kashti saabit1-o-saalim2 thi saahil3 ki tamanna4 kis ko thi
ab aisi shikasta5 kashti par saahil ki tamanna kaun kare

This could well reflect vigorous youth vs frail old age. When the boat was safe and strong, who cared for the shore. Now that the boat is broken so much, what is the use of even wishing for the shore. Better to drown and die.

jo ashkoN ne bhaRkaai2 hai us aag ko ThanDa kaun kare

This is addressed to the beloved. The fire (of love) that you lit, has been put out by my tears. But who will put out the fire (of pain) that my tears inflamed.
