اُلفت کے فسانے ماضی کے، کچھ بھولے کچھ یاد آ بھی گئے
غم کے بادل دل پہ مرے، کچھ چھٹ بھی گئے کچھ چھا بھی گئے

جب عشق کی وادی میں ہم تم، لے کر ہاتھوں میں ہاتھ چلے
گو خار بھی الجھے دامن میں، کچھ لمحے گل برسا بھی گئے
۳
جب رازِ محبت مجھ سے سنا، کچھ وہ بھی پسیجے دم بھر کو
چپ رہتے ہوئے کچھ کہہ بھی گئے، اور کہتے ہوئے کترا بھی گئے
۴
بازی میں محبت کی اکثر، کچھ مرحلے ایسے آئے ہیں
جب جیت کے بھی ہم ہار گئے، اور ہار کے ہم کچھ پا بھی گئے

وہ آئے اور کچھ حال نہ پوچھا، دل کا درد بھی کچھ نہ سنا
یوں دیکھ کہ ان کو دل کے کنول، کچھ کھل بھی گئے مرجھا بھی گئے

اُلجھی سی ہیں عشق کی راہیں، جوکھم سی کچھ عشق کی منزل
ان راہوں میں کچھ کھو بھی گئے، اور منزل کو کچھ پا بھی گئے

گو لاکھ جتن ہم نے بھی کئے، پر قلب کی تسکیں ہو نہ سکی
ارمانوں سے دل خالی نہ ہوا، کچھ گُھٹ بھی گئے کچھ پا بھی گئے

کیا جانے ہم کیا کہہ بیٹھے، وہ کہہ نہ سکے جو کہنا تھا
ہم پیار کے تانے بانے کو، سلجھا بھی گئے الجھا بھی گئے

یہ حسن کی مستی ان کی حبیبؔ، یہ کیا ہی انوکھی مستی ہے
کچھ خود بھی ہوئے بے خود اس سے، کچھ بے خود ہم کو بنا بھی گئے

गो ख़ार भी उलझे दामन में कुछ लम्हे गुल बरसा भी गए

जब राज़-ए मोहब्बत मुझ से सुना कुछ वो भी पसीजे दम भर को
चुप रहते हुए कुछ कह भी गए और कहते हुए कतरा भी गए

बाज़ी में मोहब्बत की अक्सर कुछ मरहले ऐसे आए हैं
जब जीत के भी हम हार गए और हार के हम कुछ पा भी गए

वो आए और कुछ हाल न पूछा दिल का दर्द भी कुछ न सुना
यूँ देख के उन को दिल के कँवल कुछ खिल भी गए मुरझा भी गए

उलझी सी हैं इश्क़ की राहें जोखम सी कुछ इश्क़ की मंज़िल
इन राहों में कुछ खो भी गए और मंज़िल को कुछ पा भी गए

गो लाख जतन हम ने भी किए पर क़ल्ब की तस्कीं हो न सकी
अरमानों से दिल ख़ाली न हुआ कुछ घुट भी गए कुछ पा भी गए

क्या जाने हम क्या कह बैठे वो कह न सके जो कहना था
हम प्यार के ताने-बाने को सुलझा भी गए उलझा भी गए

ये हुस्न की मस्ती उन की हबीब ये क्या ही अनोखी मस्ती है
कुछ ख़ुद भी हुए बे-ख़ुद उस से कुछ बे-ख़ुद हम को बना भी गए

He was a scholar of sanskrit, English, faarsi and urdu, and was an active participant in the independence struggle, most notably with Khaan abdul Ghaffaar KhaaN. MA from aligaRh and later LLB, law practice 1929. He migrated to India after partition in 1947. IAS – Collector and later Education Secretary. Early retirement in 1960, but recalled later to serve three more years in jabalpur and retired there. In 1969 he served on Ghalib shataabdhi naagarik samiti which organized four ‘tarahi’ mushaa’era over that year and published a book. He composed several Ghazal in the style of Ghalib. This one from his collection ‘naGhma-e zindagi’.
