اِنقلاب کئے جا رہی ہوں میں ۔ نجمہؔ تصدّق

جلووں کو باریاب کئے جا رہی ہوں میں
قلب و نظر خراب کئے جا رہی ہوں میں
۲
بیداریوں کی شمع جلا کر جہان میں
تجدیدِ اِنقلاب کئے جا رہی ہوں میں

بہکی ہوں میں لطیف جوانی کے کیف میں
ہر چیز کو شراب کئے جا رہی ہوں میں

کتنا بلند ہے مری تعمیر کا مذاق
تاروں کو آفتاب کئے جا رہی ہوں میں
۵
کیوں میں گناہِ عشق سے ڈرتی ہوں اس قدر
ہستی کو کیوں عذاب کئے جا رہی ہوں میں

نجمہؔ نگاہِ شوق کو حدّ نگاہ تک
جلووں سے فیضیاب کئے جا رہی ہوں میں
इन्क़ेलाब किये जा रही हुं मैं – नजमा तसद्दुक़

जल्वों को बारयाब किये जा रही हूँ मैं
क़ल्ब-ओ-नज़र ख़राब किये जा रही हूँ मैं

बेदारियौं कि शम’अ जला कर जहान में
तज्दीद-ए इन्क़ेलाब किये जा रही हुं मैं
३
बहकी हूँ मैं लतीफ़ जवानी के कैफ़ में
हर चीज़ को शराब किये जा रही हूँ मैं
४
कितना बुलंद है मेरी ता’मीर का मज़ाक़
तारों को आफ़्ताब किये जा रही हूँ मैं
५
क्यूं मैं गुनाह-ए इश्क़ से डरती हूँ इस क़दर
हस्ती को क्यों अज़ाब किये जा रही हूँ मैं
६
नजमा निगाह-ए शौक़ को हद्द-ए निगाह तक
जल्वों से फ़ैज़-याब किये जा रही हूँ मैं

She grew up in an orthodox and conservative family with much opposition to her higher education, but she persisted and completed her MA, BT and worked in the education department. She learnt urdu, faarsi and arabi and started composing early in life, but suspended her poetic inclination during her college education. During her time, women poets wrote in the male gender but she broke tradition and wrote in her own gender and openly expressed her feelings, a great taboo at the time. What is the image that she is projecting – flaunting her own image, the image of a just future, or the image of divinity. We are left to guess but whatever she is projecting, is successful in destroying/conquering hearts and sight, making the heart long for desire and the eyes blinded/dazzled with its glory/beauty.

Lighting the lamp of awareness in this world, I keep renewing the desire for change/progress.

har chiiz ko sharaab kiye ja rahi huN maiN 1.stagger, intoxicated 2.pleasant 3.pleasure
The poet’s youth is very pleasing and she derives pleasure from it akin to being intoxicated. She is staggering with the pleasure of youth. It is as if she has made everything act like wine.

kitna buland1 hai meri ta’amir2 ka mazaaq3
taaroN ko aaftaab4 kiye ja rahi huN maiN 1.elevated, high calibre 2.building, creating 3.taste, quality 4.sun
The art/taste of my creativity is of such high calibre that I turn stars bright like the sun.

kyuN maiN gunaah-e ishq1 se Darti huN is qadar2
hasti3 ko kyuN azaab4 kiye ja rahi huN maiN 1.sin of love 2.so much 3.life, being 4.burden, torment
This is a bold and courageous statement for a woman poet of her time. Why am I so scared of committing the ‘sin of love’. Why am I making my own life so difficult.
