تمہارا  ہو  کے  مجھ  کو  اپنی  ہستی  کا  گماں  کیوں  ہو

دوئی  کو  دُور  کر  دو،  اب  یہ  پردہ  درمیاں  کیوں  ہو

ضرورت  اب  نہیں  محدود  اپنی  ذات  تک  میری

چمن  کی  خیر  مانگوں،  مجھ  کو  فکرِ  آشیاں  کیوں  ہو

تمہیں  شائد  تعلق  ترک  کرنا  بھی  نہیں  آتا

غرض  مجھ  سے  نہیں  تو  دل  پہ  میرے  حکمراں  کیوں  ہو

تمہیں  محبوب  ہو،  تم  ہی  محب  میرے  فسانے  میں

کہ  تم  عنواں  ہو  جس  کے  اُس  میں  ذکرِ  دیگراں  کیوں  ہو

ترے  قدموں  پہ  صدقے  زندگی  کر  دی  تو  پھر  مجھ  کو

فنا  کا  شوق  یا  شوقِ  حیاتِ  جاوداں  کیوں  ہو

مجھے  تو  ناز  ہے  تُو  واقفِ  اَسرارِ  پنہاں  ہے

مری  حاجت  کا  پھر  دستِ  دعا  ہی  ترجماں  کیوں  ہو

درِ  میخانہ  وا  ہے،  جس  کا  جتنا  ظرف  ہو  پی  لے

کمی  بیشی  کی  ضامن  رحمتِ  پیرِ  مغاں  کیوں  ہو

تمہاری  نذر  کے  قابل  نہ  یہ  دل  ہے،  نہ  یہ  سر  ہے

کہ  جو  فانی  ہو،  وہ  میری  محبّت  کا  نشاں  کیوں  ہو

شفاؔ  ہم  کو  خیالِ  دوست  سے  فرصت  نہیں  ملتی

ہماری  بزم  میں  ذکرِ  فلاں،  ابنِ  فلاں  کیوں  ہو

रहमत-ए पीर-ए मुग़ां क्यूं हो – प्रेम लाल शिफ़ा देहलवी

तुम्हारा हो के मुझ को अपनी हस्ती का गुमां क्यूं हो

दोई को दूर कर दो, अब ये पर्दा दरमियं क्यूं हो

ज़रूरत अब नहीं महदूद अपनी ज़ात तक मेरी

चमन की ख़ैर मांगूं, मुझ को फ़िक्र-ए आशियां क्यूं हो

तुम्हें शा’एद ता’अल्लुक़ तर्क करना भी नहीं आता

ग़रज़ मुझ से नहीं तो दिल पे मेरे हुक्मरां क्यूं हो

तुम्हीं महबूब हो, तुम हि मोहिब मेरे फ़साने में

के तुम उन्वां हो जिस के उस में ज़िक्र-ए दीगरां क्यूं हो

तेरे क़द्मौं पे सद्क़े ज़िंदगी कर दी तो फिर मुझ को

फ़ना का शौक़ या शौक़-ए हयात-ए जावेदां क्यूं हो

मुझे तो नाज़ है तू वाक़ेफ़-ए अस्रार-ए पिन्हां है

मेरी हाजेत का फिर दस्त-ए दुआ ही तर्जुमां क्यूं हो

दर-ए मैख़ाना वा है, जिस का जितना ज़रफ़ हो पी ले

कमी बेशी कि ज़ामिन रहमत-ए पीर-ए मुग़ां क्यूं हो

तुम्हारी नज़्र के क़ाबिल न ये दिल है, न ये सर है

के जो फ़ानी हो वो मेरी मोहब्बत का निशां क्यूं हो

शिफ़ा हम को ख़याल-ए दोस्त से फ़ुर्सत नहीं मिलती

हमारी बज़्म में ज़िक्र-ए फ़ुलां, इब्न-ए फ़ुलां क्यूं हो

Completed his medical degree 1934 and started practice. Learnt Russian and French taking degrees in 1954. Seven languages urdu, hindi, sanskrit, English, Russian, French and some German. He did urdu translations of classical Russian poems. Interested in urdu shaa’eri from childhood, memorizing ash’aar of many masters. Started composing and became shaagird of fazl-e ilaahi maKhmoor dehlavi. First publication was translation of Russian poems. His own collection of urdu was published in 1959. This Ghazal has sufiyaana undertones and uses the same radeef/qaafiya as Ghalib’s ‘muNh meN zabaaN kyuN ho’. It is linked to Ghalib naqsh-e qadam.

duii3 ko duur kar do, ab ye parda4 darmiyaaN5 kyuN ho

This appears to be addressed to the divine. Once I give myself up to you, why should I be uncertain about my own being. Remove all signs of duality. Why should there be a curtain between you and me.

zaroorat1 ab nahiN mahdood2 apni zaat3 tak meri
chaman ki Khair4 maaNguN, mujh ko fikr5-e aashiyaaN6 kyuN ho

This also appears to be addressed to god. Following convention, the poet is a bird and has built a nest in the garden. He says, my needs are not limited to my personal being. I ask for the well-being of the whole garden; why should I be worried just about my nest.

Gharaz4 mujh se nahiN to dil pe mere hukmraaN5 kyuN ho

This appears to be addressed to the earthly beloved. Perhaps you don’t know how to break relationships. If you have no concern about me, then why are you in control of my heart.

keh tum unvaaN4 ho jis ke us meN zikr5-e diigaraaN6 kyuN ho

This could apply both to the earthly and the divine beloved. You alone are the beloved and you are the lover in my story. When you are the title/theme, then why should there be any narrative of any others.

fana3 ka shauq4 ya shauq-e hayaat5-e jaavedaaN6 kyuN ho

When I have sacrificed my life at your feet, then why should I have any desire left of either non-existence or of eternal existence i.e., I have become one with you.

meri haajit5 ka phir dast6-e dua hi tarjumaaN7 kyuN ho

The door of the tavern is wide open and welcoming for anyone to drink as much as their capacity. Why then should the kindness of the head of the tavern be the decision maker of how much anyone gets.

Neither my heart nor my head is capable/deserving of being a devotional offering to you. Why should something that is mortal be an emblem of my (eternal) love for you.
