بدل جاتے ہیں – احمد فراز
اب کے تجدیدِ وفا کا نہیں اِمکاں جاناں
یاد کیا تجھکو دلائیں تیرا پیماں جاناں
یوں ہی موسم کی ادا دیکھ کے یاد آیا ہے
کِس قدر جلد بدل جاتے ہیں اِنساں جاناں
زندگی تیری عطا تھی سو تیرے نام کی ہے
ہم نے جیسے بھی بسر کی تر احساں جاناں
دل یہ کہتا ہے کہ شاید ہو فسردہ تو بھی
دل کی کیا بات سنیں دل توہے ناداں جاناں
مدّتوں سے یہی عالم نہ تو قّع نہ اُمید
دل پکارے ہی چلا جاتا ہے جاناں جاناں
ہم بھی کیا سادہ تھے ہم نے بھی سمجھ رکھا تھا
غمِ دوراں سے جدا ہے غمِ جاناں جاناں
اب کے کچھ ایسی سجی محفلِ یاراں جاناں
سر بہ زانو ہے کوئی سر بہ گر یبان جاناں
ہر کوئی اپنی ہی آواز سے کانپ اُٹھتا ہے
ہر کوئی اپنے ہی ساۓ سے ہراساں جاناں
جسکو دیکھو وہی زنجیر بہ پا لگتا ہے
شہر کا شہر ہوا داخلِ زنداں جاناں
اب تیرا ذکر بھی شاید ہی غزل میں آئے
اور سے اور ہوئے درد کے عنواں جاناں
ہم کہ روٹھی ہو ی ُرت کو بھی منا لیتے تھے
ہم نے دیکھا ہی نہ تھا موسمِ ہجراں جاناں
ہوش آیا تو سب ہی خواب تھے ریزہ ریزہ
جیسے اُڑتے ہوئے اوراقِ پریشاں جاناں

अब के तजदीद-ए वफ़ा का नहीं इम्कां जानां
याद क्या तुझ को दिलाऐं तेरा पैमां जानां
यूं ही मौसम की अदा देख के याद आया है
किस क़दर जल्द बदल जाते हैं इन्सां जानां
ज़िंदगी तेरी अता थी सो तेरे नाम की है
हम ने जैसे भी बसर की तेरा एहसां जानां
दिल ये कहता है के शायद हो फ़सुर्दा तू भी
दिल की क्या बात सुनें दिल तो है नादां जानां
मुद्दतों से ये ही आलम, ना तव्क़्क़ो ना उमीद
दिल पुकारे ही चला जाता है जानां जानां
हम भी क्या सादा थे, हम ने भी समझ रक्खा था
ग़म-ए दौरां से जुदा है ग़म-ए जानां जानां
अब के कुछ ऐसी सजी महफ़िल-ए यारां जानां
सर बा ज़ानू है कोइ सर बा गरेबां जानां
हर कोई अपनी ही आवाज़ से कांप उठता है
हर कोई अपने ही सा’ए से हिरासां जानां
जिसको देखो वही ज़ंजीर बा पा लगता है
शहर का शहर हुआ दाख़िल-ए ज़िन्दां जानां
अब तेरा ज़िक्र भी शाएद ही ग़ज़ल में आए
और से और हुए दर्द के उन्वां जानां
हम के रूठी हुई रुत को भी मना लेते थे
हम ने देखा ही ना था मौसम-ए हिज्रां जानां
होश आया तो सभी ख़्वाब थे रेज़ा-रेज़ा
जैसे उड़ते हुए औराक़-ए परशां जानां

abke tajdeed1-e vafa2 ka nahiN imkaaN3 janaaN
yaad kya tujh ko dilaa’eN tera paimaaN4 janaaN1. renewal 2. promise, faith 3. possibility 4. vow
Now there is no longer any possibility of renewal of faith. What is the use of reminding you of your vows/promises.
yuN hi mausam ki ada1 dekh ke yaad aaya hai
kis qadr2 jald3 badal jaate haiN insaaN janaaN1. style, frivolities 2. how much 3. quickly
Looking at the frivolously changing weather, I was reminded of how quickly people change i.e. forget their promises.
zindagi teri ata1 thi so tere naam ki hai
hum ne jaise bhi basar2 ki tera ehsaaN3 janaaN1. grant, gift 2. spend 3. kindness, benevolence
This may be a sarcastic statement. Life (or the joy of life) was a gift from you. However we are able to live it out, it is after all your kindness.
dil ye kahta hai ke shaa’ed ho fasurda1 tu bhi
dil ki kya baat suneN dil to hai nadaaN2 janaaN1. wilted, sorrowful 2. simpleton
My heart tells me that you may be sorrowful too (at my condition) but how can I trust my heart, it is after all a simpleton.
muddatauN1 se ye hi aalam2, na tavaqqo3 na umeed4
dil pukaare hi chala jaata hai janaaN janaaN1. for long period(s) 2. condition 3. expectation 4. hope
For long now I have been in this condition –without any expectation, without any hope. But the heart keeps calling out to you.
hum bhi kya saada1 the, hum ne bhi samajh rakkha tha
Gham-e dauraaN2 se juda3 hai Gham-e janaaN3 janaaN1. plain, simple 2. sorrow of the times (of living) 3. separate, different 4. sorrow of love
This has faint echoes of the call of the Progressive Writers’ Association to write poetry about social issues of inequality and injustice. We were such simpletons, we thought that the pain/struggle of living was different from the pain of love.
ab ke kuchh aisi saji1 mahfil2-e yaraaN3 janaaN
sar ba zanoo4 hai koii sar ba garebaaN5 janaaN1. arranged, assembled 2. gathering 3. friends, lovers 4. head resting on the knee (in dejection) 5. head hung in the collar (in shame)
This time the gathering got assembled in such a pathetic way that one was sitting here with his head on his knees and the other over there with his hung down in his collar.
har koi apni hi aavaz se kaaNp uThta hai
har koi apne hi saa’e se hirasaaN1 janaaN1. hopeless, fearful
Everyone trembles at the sound of his own voice, is fearful of his own shadow.
jisko dekho vahi zanjiir ba paa1 lagta hai
shahr ka shahr hua daaKhil2-e zindaaN3 janaaN1. on the feet 2. entered into 3. prison
Whoever I see, appears to have shackles on their feet. It is as if the whole town has been put in prison.
ab tera zikr1 bhi shaa’ed2 hi Ghazal meN aa’e
aur se aur3 hue dard ke unvaaN4 janaaN1. mention 2. perhaps 3. different to different, from this to that 4. theme
This also reflects the call of the Progressive Writers’ Association. There may no longer be a mention of the beloved in my Ghazals. There are many different themes of pain to deal with.
hum ke rooThi1 hui rut2 ko bhi manaa lete the
hum ne dekha hi na tha mausam-e hijraaN3 janaaN1. offended, miffed 2. season, weather 3. separation (from the beloved), pain
We are those that could even tame the weather. We had never known the sorrow/pain of separation (before you).

jaise uRte hue auraaq4-e pareshaaN5 janaaN1. consciousness, awareness 2. dreams, hopes 3. tatters 4. pages 5. scattered
When we became aware of what was going on we realized that all our hopes were in tatters like pages blowing the wind.
