थी रूह में जो शब की कसाफ़त वो धुल गई

He is very secular and nationalistic in his writings and rebels against orthodoxy. His range of language and vocabulary is simply amazing. He is well known for his fiery nazm. He also wrote many romantic as well as cerebral nazm and Ghazal. His marsia are a celebration of dignified death rather than bowing to injustice even at the cost of life. He also wrote numerous rubaaii. He was known to take early morning walks and admired the beauty of dawn. The shimmering stars broke into a morning raag … a nice juxtaposition of the sense of sight and hearing. To this music, the morning breeze began to sing songs of rejuvenation/awakening. Buds are still closed, not yet blossomed into flowers, so their shape is like that of an eye. There is dew that drips from the buds. This is likened to the wine of dawn … Khumaar-e sub’h. The rim of the horizon is like the rim of a goblet of wine. Thus, this goblet emerged into sight from the deep blue/green embellishment of the dawn. With all this beauty around him, the soul of the poet became the confidant of Love … it learnt the secrets of love and the whole world turned into a display of ‘naaz’ – the pride/beauty of nature.

Reference is the story of Moses/moosa who went up mount tuur and saw a flash of lightning, used as a symbolism of divine light. Also when buds bloom, the unfolding of petals is imagined to create a gentle clicking sound – chiTaknaa. Thus, lamps were put out, birds began to chirp, the sky lifted its veil, divine light shimmered on the earth, and the hearts of people who understand love, were so touched that it felt like their hearts were crushed in their bosoms. From the eyes, shimmering tears drained down cheeks (of the poet). Rivers flowed (perhaps river of tears-intense emotion), rose buds clicked as they bloomed, such was the style of sunrays breaking out.

The hem of the morning breeze is moist with fresh dew. These are not mere gusts of wind, but a rain of heavenly grace. Every breath gives ablution/cleansing of the chest. The pure dew-laden breeze washes away the impurity/darkness/sorrow of the night lingering in the soul. The river, in its ripples, reflects the sun and appears to be dancing in company with it, just like the spirit of intoxication dances on waves of wine.  Are these waves, or strands of hair waving restlessly.  The bubbles on the water appear as if the spirit/soul of the morning breeze is trapped inside.  Waves flow with such passion and yet harmony, like someone just waking up from a graceful dream.

Cool breeze blows in, blowing out candles along the way.  Putting out candles is symbolic of the end of the night.  Lovers stand with heads bowed and smoke rises from the extinguished wick.  Both of these images signify the passing of the night.  Rising smoke is also juxtaposed with rising mist from the valleys.  In the valleys, the light of dawn advances, shyly, hesitating like a new bride.  The bride (dawn) has an enchanting smile on her lips, her eyes are red because she has not had much sleep and her forelocks provide cover to her eyes … the imagery brings to mind the red early morning sun, slightly obsured with wisps of clouds like curly hair.

The whispered farewell of the morning star to the moon; cool, fragrant breeze from the grove of trees; this green grass; eyes cannot dwell on the twists and turns of the bubbling stream as if in pain; the graceful flight of the butterfly; the overwhelming beauty urging me to seek refuge of the divine.  The darkness of the night still covering the meadows and sky carrying the royal lord (sun) across.
