یہ آب و تابِ چادرِ آبِ رواں یہ نور
نُزہت کا یہ ہجوم، لطافت کا یہ وفور
یہ دامنِ نسیم میں سرمایۂ سرور
بکھرے ہوئے زمین پہ موتی یہ دور دور
یہ جھلکیاں سی پردۂ ظلمت میں نور کی
یہ معرفت میں غرق صدائیں طیور کی

کچھ کہہ کے نجمِ صبح سے یہ الوداعِ ماہ
یہ کنج کی نسیمِ خنک یہ ہری گیاہ
یہ نہر کی تڑپ کہ ٹھہرتی نہیں نگاہ
یہ پنکھڑی کا ناز کہ اللہ کی پناہ
صحنِ زمیں پہ شب کی سیاہی لیے ہوئے
یہ آسمان، افسرِ شاہی لیے ہوئے

کندن سے یہ کلس، یہ دلآویز کوہسار
یہ دل کشا چمن یہ فرح بخش لالہ زار
شاخوں کا دلبری سے لچکنا یہ بار بار
یہ مہر کا جمال نہ پنہاں نہ آشکار
یہ آسمان جلوہ گری پر تُلا ہوا
یہ حسنِ لازوال کا پرچم کُھلا ہوا

اے شیخ تو نہیں ہے حقائق سے بہرہ یاب
فطرت پرست جوشؔ پہ اور اِس قدر عتاب
فِطرت بھی تیری طرح سے ہے صاحبِ کتاب
اس دین کا صحیفۂ زرّیں ہے آفتاب
خاشاک کہہ رہا ہے جسے تُو وہ پھول ہے
ناداں! صباحِ غنچہ کشا بھی رسول ہے

ये झलकियां सी पर्दा-ए ज़ुल्मत में नूर की

सहन-ए ज़मीं पे शब की सियाही लिए हुए
ये आसमान, अफ़्सर-ए शाही लिए हुए

कुंदन से ये कलस, ये दिलआवेज़ कोहसार
ये दिलकुशा चमन ये फरह-बख़्श लाला-ज़ार
शाख़ौं का दिलबरी से लचकना ये बार बार
ये मेहर का जमाल न पिन्हां न आश्कार
ये आसमां जल्वा-गरी पर तुला हुआ
ये हुस्न-ए ला-ज़वाल का परचम खुला हुआ

अए शैख़, तू नहीं है हक़ा’एक़ से बहरा-याब
फ़ितरत परस्त जोश पे, और इस क़दर इताब
फ़ितरत भी तेरी तरह से है साहिब-ए किताब
इस दीन का सहीफ़ा-ए ज़र्रीं है आफ़्ताब
ख़ाशाक कह रहा है जिसे तू वो फूल है
नादां! सबाह-ए ग़ुंचा-कुशा भी रसूल है

He is very secular and nationalistic in his writings and rebels against orthodoxy. His range of language and vocabulary is simply amazing. He is well known for his fiery nazm. He also wrote many romantic as well as cerebral nazm and Ghazal. His marsia are a celebration of dignified death rather than bowing to injustice even at the cost of life. He also wrote numerous rubaaii. He was known to take early morning walks and admired the beauty of dawn.
