دِل اگر دِل ہے تو ہر حال میں رُسوا ہوگا
جب غمِ عشق نہ ہوگا غمِ دُنیا ہوگا

عقل ڈرتی ہے مآلِ غمِ دِل کیا ہوگا
عشق کہتا ہے کہ ہر حال میں جینا ہوگا

لُٹ گیا عشق کی نظروں کا وہ سامانِ شکیب
اب ترا حسن جہاں بھی ہو تماشا ہوگا

سازِ دِل تِشنہ مضراب ہے، مایوس نہ ہو
ایک دِن نغمہ اُمّید بھی پیدا ہوگا

شبِ غم آہ یہ اندوہ، یہ اُلجھن یہ تڑپ
سوچتا ہوں کہ مآلِ شبِ غم کیا ہوگا

دِل ہے اور تلخیٔ غم، ہاتھ ہیں اور ساغرِمئے
کیا خبر تھی ہمیں یہ زہر بھی پینا ہوگا

وہ دِلائیں تو جفاؤں کے تسلسل کا یقیں
اِس سے بڑھ کر کوئی اِنعامِ وفا کیا ہوگا

آنے والی ہے محبّت کی وہ منزل شاہد
جب ہمیں یاس پہ اُمّید کا دھوکا ہوگا

साज़-ए दिल तिश्ना-ए मिज़्राब है मायूस न हो
एक दिन नग़्मा-ए उम्मीद भी पैदा होगा

शब-ए ग़म आह ये अंदोह, ये उलझन, ये तड़प
सोचता हूं के म’आल-ए शब-ए ग़म क्या होगा

दिल है और तल्ख़ी-ए ग़म, हाथ हैं और साग़र-ए मै
क्या ख़बर थी हमें ये ज़हर भी पीना होगा
७
वो दिलाएं तो जफ़ाओं के तसल्सुल का यकीं
इस से बढ़ कर कोई इन’आम-ए वफ़ा क्या होगा
८
आने वाली है मोहब्बत कि वो मंज़िल शाहेद
जब हमें यास पे उम्मीद का धोका होगा

The heart after all is the heart and it will be regretful under any and all circumstances. If it does not suffer from the pangs of love of the beloved, it will suffer from seeing the pain of the world.

The mind is apprehensive about the result of the “pain of the heart”, i.e., pain of love. But love says that you have to ‘live’ i.e., make a commitment under any condition.

ab tera husn6 jahaaN hoga tamaasha7 hoga 1.plundered 2.love, lover/admirer 3.sight, discrimination/sophistication 4.means of 5.satisfaction, fulfilment, making do 6.beauty, beloved 7.spectacle
‘saamaan-e shakeb’ is used here to imply the means/ability to get fulfilment from what you have – for example from a fleeting glance of the beloved. But such ability has been plundered from the eyes of lovers i.e., they are no longer sincere lovers who are willing to accept deprivation and be satisfied with it. Therefore, now wherever your beauty is displayed, there will be a spectacle i.e., lustful ogling, staring rather than genuine devotion.

saaz1-e dil tishna2-e mizraab3 hai, maayoos4 na ho
ek din naGhma5-e ummeed6 bhi paida hoga 1.musical instrument, lute 2.thirsty for 3.pluck worn on finger to play strings of the lute (or sitar) 4.disappointed 5.song of 6.hope
There is nothing/no one that is pulling heartstrings in the right way to make the right music. This could be due to oppression or the lack of a leader. But the poet does not want people to disappointed, because some day a song of hope will emerge.

sochta huN ke m’aal5-e shab-e Gham kya hoga 1.evening, night 2.alas 3.grief, sorrow 4.restlessness, anxiety 5.result, end
Alas, this night sorrow with its grief, anxiety and pain. I am apprehensive what the result of this is going to be. This could be a comment on conventional romantic love or more likely on societal conditions.

kya Khabar4 thi hameN ye zahr5 bhi piina hoga 1.difficulty, bitterness 2.cup 3.wine 4.knowledge 5.poison
The poet suggests that he drinks wine to forget the bitterness of his pain (either unrequited love, or pain of social injustice/suffering). He did not think that he would have to take this poison.

is se baRh kar koii in’aam5-e vafa6 kya hoga

The worst outcome for the poet/lover is if the beloved simply ignores him. He yearns for union but is quite happy to accept her cruelties, teasing and testing. How can there be any gift/reward of fidelity more than an assurance that she will continue her teasing.

The poet/lover has been through many stages of love but never reached the stage of hope. He is now coming to a stage when even yearning can be a reason to be hopeful i.e., it is enough for him to have just enough reason to continue to yearn.
