تو غزل ہوتی ہے ۔ پنڈت رتن موہن زتشی خارؔ دہلوی

رنج جب حد سے فزوں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے
جب تمنّاؤں کا خون ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے
۲
عشق کا ہوتا ہے احساس جدائی میں سوا
وصل اِمکاں سے بِروں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے
۳
دل میں جذبات کا ہو ایک تلاطم برپا
عشق مائل بہ جنوں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے
۴
شِدّتِ درد سے ہو ٹیس جگر میں پیدا
حال جب دل کا زبوں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے
۵
دلِ وارفتہ کو اللہ نہ ہو چین نصیب
کون کہتا ہے سکوں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے
۶
قابلِ رشک ہے پروانے کا جل مرنا بھی
شمع ساں سوزِ دروں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے

سائباں سر پہ بنیں اُس کی گھنیری زلفیں
چشمِ دلبر کا فسوں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے

آستاں بوسی کا ہو جائے شرف گر حاصل
سر کسی در پہ نِگوں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے

لالہ رُخ خارؔ ہو آغوش میں پیمانہ بہ دست
گردشِ چرخ جو یوں ہو تو غزل ہوتی ہے

जब तमन्नाओं का ख़ूं हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है

इश्क का होता है एहसास जुदाई में सिवा
वस्ल इम्कां से बिरूं हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है

दिल में जज़्बात का हो एक तलातुम बरपा
इश्क माइल-बह-जुनूँ हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है

शिद्दत-ए दर्द से हो टीस जिगर में पैदा
हाल जब दिल का ज़ुबूं हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है

दिल-ए वारफ़्ता को अल्लाह न हो चैन नसीब
कौन कहता है सुकूँ हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है

क़ाबिल-ए रश्क है परवाने का जल मरना भी
शम्म’अ-साँ सोज़-ए दरूं हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है
७
सायबां सर पे बनें उसकी घनीरी ज़ुल्फ़ें
चश्म-ए दिलबर का फ़सूं हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है

आस्तां-बोसी का हो जाए शरफ़ गर हासिल
सर किसी दर पे निगूं हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है
९
लाला-रुख़ ख़ार हो आग़ोश में पैमाना ब-दस्त
गर्दिश-ए चर्ख़ जो यूं हो तो ग़ज़ल होती है

jab tamannaoN4 ka khooN ho to Ghazal hoti hai 1.sorrow 2.limits 3.more, excess 4.unfilfilled desires, longing
When sorrow exceeds its limits, then a Ghazal is said. When the desires of the heart are crushed and bleed, they transform into a Ghazal. This couplet reflects the idea that intense emotional pain and unfulfilled longing are the essence of a Ghazal.

ishq ka hota hai ehsaas1 judaaii2 meN sivaa3
vasl4 imkaaN5 se biruuN6 ho to Ghazal hoti hai 1.sensation, feeling 2.separation 3.more, excess 4.union 5.possibility 6.outside, beyond
The feeling of love is heightened in separation. When the possibility of union seems beyond the realm of possibility, it gives birth to a Ghazal.

dil meN jazbaat1 ka ho e’k talaatum2 barpa3
ishq4 maa’el-bah-junooN5 ho to Ghazal hoti hai 1.emotions 2.storm 3.create, bring about 4.love, implied-lover 5.inclined towards madness
When emotions create a storm in the heart, and love borders on madness, it becomes a Ghazal.

shiddat1-e dard se ho Tiis2 jigar3 meN paida
haal4 jab dil ka zubooN5 ho to Ghazal hoti hai 1.intensity 2.shooting/piercing pain 3.liver/heart 4.condition 5.weak, helpless
When the intensity of pain creates a piercing ache in the heart, and the state of the heart is reduced to helplessness, it transforms into a Ghazal.

dil-e vaarafta1 ko allah na ho cha’en2 naseeb3
kaun kahta hai sukooN4 ho to Ghazal hoti hai 1.mad, disturbed 2.peace 3.granted 4.peace, tranquility
May god never grant the mad/disturbed heart any peace. Who says that tranquility, peace of mind is necessary for a Ghazal? i.e. a mad/disturbed heart rather than a peaceful/tranquil heart generates Ghazal.

qaabil1-e rashk2 hai parvaane3 ka jal marna bhi
sham’a-saaN4 soz5-e daruuN6 ho to Ghazal hoti hai 1.deserving of 2.envy 3.moth 4.like the candle 5.burning 6.inner
Surely, the moth’s act of sacrifice by burning in the flame is enviable. When there is an inner burning passion, like that of a candle, it becomes a Ghazal.

saa’ebaaN1 sar pe baneN uss ki ghaneri zulf’eN2
chashm3-e dilbar4 ka fusooN5 ho to Ghazal hoti hai 1.shelter 2.hair 3.eye 4.beloved 5.magic, enchantment
When the beloved’s dark tresses form a canopy/shelter over the head, and the beloved’s eyes cast a spell, it becomes a Ghazal.

aastaaN-bosi1 ka ho jaa’e sharaf2 gar haasil3
sar kisi dar4 pe niguN5 ho to Ghazal hoti hai 1.kissing the threshold 2.honour, privelege 3.available 4.door 5.bowed
If one receives/is given the honor/privelege of being allowed to kiss the threshold of the beloved, and the head is bowed at her door, then a Ghazal is said.

When the beloved, with a face like a tulip with a wine cup in hand, is folded in my embrace; if such were my luck, then a Ghazal emerges. This she’r (at least the first misra) has echoes of omar Khayyaam.
