جبینِ وقت پر کیسی شکن ہے ہم نہیں سمجھے
کوئی کیونکر حریفِ علم وفن ہے ہم نہیں سمجھے
کسی بھی شمع سے بیزار کیوں ہو کوئی پروانہ
یہ کیااِس دور کا دیوانہ پن ہے ہم نہیں سمجھے
بہت سمجھے تھے ہم اِ س دور کی فرقہ پرستی کو
زباں بھی آج شیخ و برہمن ہے ہم نہیں سمجھے
اگر اُردو پہ بھی اِلزام ہے باہر سے آنے کا
تو پھر ہندوستاں کس کاوطن ہے ہم نہیں سمجھے
چمن کاحسن تو ہر رنگ کے پھولوں سے ہے راشد
کوئی بھی پھول کیوں ننگِ چمن ہے ہم نہیں سمجھے

जबीन ए वक़्त पर कैसी शिकन है हम नहीं समझे
कोई क्यूँकर हरीफ़ ए इल्म ओ फ़न है हम नहीं समझे
किसी भी शम’अ से बेज़ार क्यूँ हो कोई परवाना
ये क्या इस दौर का दीवानापन है हम नहीं समझे
बहुत समझे थे हम इस दौर की फ़िरक़ा परस्ती को
ज़बां भी आज शैख़ ओ बरहमन है हम नहीं समझे
अगर उर्दू पे भी इलज़ाम है बाहिर से आने का
तो फिर हिन्दोस्तान किसका वतन है हम नहीं समझे
चमन का हुस्न तो हर रंग के फूलों से है राशिद
कोई भी फूल क्यूँ नंग ए वतन हो हम नहीं समझे

Why is the brow of the Times wrinkled, I do not know. How can anyone oppose knowledge and talent, I do not know.
kisi bhi shama’a se bezaar kyuN ho koi parvana
ye kya is daur ka divanapan hai hum nahiN samjheShama’a and parvana are classical metaphors for lover and beloved. How can a lover be tired of the beloved. What is this folly of the present times? I do not know.

zaban2 bhi aaj shaiKh o barhaman3 hai hum nahiN samjhe1.communalism 2. tongue, language 3. metaphor for different religion
We understand/know that there is communalism these days. But how can a language have religion? I do not know.
agar Urdu pe bhi ilzam1 hai bahir se aane ka
to phir Hindostan kiska vatan hai hum nahiN samjhe1.accusation
If Urdu is accused of being foreign here then whose homeland is India? I do not know. Urdu, developed from the multi-cultural milieu of India, cannot be called a “foreign” language.

koi bhi phool kyuN naNge chaman1 ho hum nahiN samjhe1.cause of shame of the garden
Beauty of the garden is enhanced by flowers of all colours, O Raashid. How can any flower be the garden’s shame? I do not know.
