The poet is taking responsibility for leadership as well as followership. We are the traveller as well as the guide, the pathway and the destination, the storm and the boat, the helmsman and shoreline. We are revelers as well as the saqi, the crowd as well as the leader.

There is no end to the search for knowledge, thus – the rounds of wine (of knowledge) are going strong and stronger. There is nothing obstructing the circulation of the cup. There are no limits to the ocean of knowledge. Its waves know no shores. There is no place/destination on this journey where our search can even take a short rest.

We got past the stages that were difficult for others. We emerge as the voice of the martyrs in the path of Truth. And in this dark night of superstition, aimlessness and ignorance, we come bearing the light of knowledge in our hands like the (brightness of) dawn.

We drank from the poisoned cup like Socrates. We became the elixir of survival in the ocean of darkness. We were hung on the cross like Jesus and we became the healing, blessed wind from the apron of Mary. We took up the cause of Ram and Gautam and the voice of Mohammed.

We are like the flower which gives up its fragrance to the morning breeze but we are a sword facing the killer. We are the floor of the pathway to rejuvenation of our friends but we are a wall standing against the onslaught of oppression. We are happy to be sacrificed as an offering to the beloved, the pride of Love but we are a blow striking against arrogance and oppression.

The University is like a mother, nurturing and cultivating our glory. This is what gives light in our homes. O, University, your walls are painted like the (timeless) paintings of Ajanta with our blood. In every stone of your walls, our hearts will beat forever.
