Mansur al Hallaj was a Sufi scholar who spoke out against orthodoxy. He also traveled to India and studied vedic philosophy. A resonance of this is found in his statement “I am the Truth” which the orthodoxy used as an excuse to charge him with blasphemy. He was given the option of withdrawing his statement. He refused and was put to death. Mansur and his statement are used as potent symbols of resistance in Urdu poetry. The man/worker, exploited for centuries has come to know his own power this day. This is the day to declare defiance like Mansur declared, “I am the Truth”.
