امواج کا کر دیدۂ باطن سے نظارا

Click here for overall comments and on any passage for meanings and discussion. azaad (1918-2004) born in isa Khel, miaN vali, at the border between punjab and the then NWFP, had to leave Pakistan for India after partition, even though he initially had no intention of doing so. It is reported that he even wrote the first national anthem of Pakistan, sar zamin-e pak, at the invitation of jinnah. He had no bitterness, only sorrow at the loss of his home and love for both his home and his adopted home. He wrote very loving compositions to bharat ke muslmaan (1949) and to ahbab-e pakistan. The difference between these and the present is remarkable.

azaad (1918-2004) born in isa Khel, miaN vali, at the border between punjab and the then NWFP, had to leave Pakistan for India after partition, even though he initially had no intention of doing so. It is reported that he even wrote the first national anthem of Pakistan, sar zamin-e pak, at the invitation of jinnah. He had no bitterness, only sorrow at the loss of his home and love for both his home and his adopted home. He wrote very loving compositions to bharat ke muslmaan (1949) and to ahbab-e pakistan. The difference between these and the present is remarkable.

The reed has been separated from its home, the nayastaaN and is used as a flute. The music of the flute is considered its sorrowful wailing for the loss of home.
Get up and blow again like the fresh morning breeze. The flower bud is ready to bloom for you again. Every assembly throbs with passion, waiting for you. Don’t lose hope, cry/shout with joy, once again. You are sorrowful like the flute/reed wailing for the loss of home, O, muslim of India.

Do not be taken in by a show of love and kindness (by some political leaders). Look through the hidden hostility and hatred (of other political leaders). Look through the useless and heart breaking leadership and rotten politics of the times (this was 1949 when Nehru was at the helm. How things have changed!). This stanza has strong echoes of what Iqbal writes. Azad was a keen student and great admirer of Iqbal. You have forgotten the teachings of Islam.
