Click here for background and on any passage for word meanings and explanatory discussion. This nazm is from the patriotic/nationalistic phase of iqbal. He progressed to sufi universalism and then on to orthodox religiosity. This is best read along with “taraana-e milli” and “qaumi geet” to fully appreciate the transformation of iqbal. It is also good to read sahir’s “hindostaaN hamaara” which is a sarcastic parody of iqbal.

1.traveling away from home 2.homeland
The best in the world, our hindostan. We are its nightingales, it is our garden. When we are away from home, our hearts are still in our homeland and we are (spiritually) where our hearts are.

1.water of 2.river of 3.rivalry, enmity
O waters of the Ganges, do you remember the days when our caravan made camp by your shores (probably a reference to both the arrival of the Aryans and much later of Turkic invasions and migrations). Religion does not teach mutual rivalry. We are all of Hindostan, it is our homeland.
