خون جب اشک میں ڈھلتا ہے غزل ہوتی ہے
جب بھی دل رنگ بدلتا ہے غزل ہوتی ہے

تیرے اخلاص ستم ہی کا اسے فیض کہیں
منجمد درد پگھلتا ہے غزل ہوتی ہے

دل کو گرماتی ہے اشکوں کے ستاروں کی کرن
جب دیا شام کا جلتا ہے غزل ہوتی ہے

شعر ہوتا ہے شفق میں جو حنا رچتی ہے
لالہ جب خون اگلتا ہے غزل ہوتی ہے

خشک سوتوں کو جگاتے ہیں پیمبر کے قدم
ریت سے چشمہ ابلتا ہے غزل ہوتی ہے

اپنے سینے کے مِنا میں بھی تہ خنجر عشق
جب کوئی فدیہ بدلتا ہے غزل ہوتی ہے

فکر آ جاتی ہے ترسیل کے سورج کے تلے

دعوت پرسش احوال ہے یاروں سے کہو

मुंजमिद दर्द पिघलता है ग़ज़ल होती है

दिल को गरमाती है अश्कों के सितारों की किरन
जब दिया शाम का जलता है ग़ज़ल होती है

शे’र होता है शफ़क़ में जो हिना रचती है
लाला जब ख़ून उगलता है ग़ज़ल होती है

ख़ुश्क सोतों को जगाते हैं पयम्बर के क़दम
रेत से चश्मा उबलता है ग़ज़ल होती है

अपने सीने के मिना में भी तह-ए-ख़ंजर-ए-इश्क़
जब कोई फ़िदया बदलता है ग़ज़ल होती है

फ़िक्र आ जाती है तर्सील के सूरज के तले
जब कोई साया निकलता है ग़ज़ल होती है

दावत-ए-पुर्सिश-ए-अहवाल है यारों से कहो
दरिया जब आँखों का चढ़ता है ग़ज़ल होती है

जज़्बा-ओ-फ़िक्र के ख़ामोश समुंदर के तले
जब भी तूफ़ान मचलता है ग़ज़ल होती है

मेहरबाँ होता है जब जान-ए मोहब्बत तर्ज़ी

Khoon jab ashk1 meN Dhalta2 hai Ghazal hoti hai
jab bhi dil raNg badaltaa hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.tears 2.moulded, shaped
It is only when blood is moulded into tears, when the heart gets agitated, and the mood changes that a Ghazal can be written.

tere iKhlaas1-e sitam2 hi ka ise faiz3 kaheN
munjamid4 dard pighaltaa hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.consideration, sincerity 2.cruelty 3.benevolence 4.solidified
The beloved is always cruel to the poet/lover. This is considered a gift, the result of her sincere consideration of his feelings. This pain has accumulated and solidified/congealed over time. When it melts, then it flows into a Ghazal.

dil ko garmaati hai ashkoN1 ke sitaaroN ki kiran2
jab diyaa shaam ka jalta hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.tears 2.ray of light
Tears are like glittering stars. The rays of light glittering stars warm the heart i.e. heighten emotions. With heightened emotions and lamp lit for the night, the mood is set for composing a Ghazal.

she’r hota hai shafaq1 meN jo hina rachti hai
laala2 jab Khuun ugalta hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.twilight 2.tulip
The redness of the sky at twilight is likened to the colour of henna. When this colour emerges, she’r/couplet is composed. When the redness of the tulip flows like redness of blood, then a Ghazal gets written.

Khushk1 sotoN2 ko jagaate haiN payambar3 ke qadam
ret se chashma4 ubaltaa hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.dry 2.(underground) spring 3.messenger 4.spring
This has reference to the story of when ismail (who in islamic tradition, is considered to be a prophet/messenger) was left as an infant, near where the k’aaba is now, while his mother went searching for water. The little infant was thirsty and rubbed his feet in agitation. An underground spring, named zam-zam, burst forth. The gurgling sound of the spring is often used as a metaphor for music and Ghazal. Thus, it takes the feet of a messenger for a spring to burst forth and a Ghazal is born.

apne siine ke mina1 meN bhi tah2-e Khanjar-e-ishq
jab koi fidya3 badaltaa hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.a place near makkah where ritual sacrifice is performed 2.under, beneath 3.sacrificial animal
This has reference to the ibrahim-ismail story of sacrifice. When ibrahim was getting ready to slit his son’s throat, offering him as a sacrifice, it is said that at the last minute, he was replaced with a ram. The poet suggests that there is a mina, place of sacrifice, in his bosom too, where under the dagger of love, a sacrifice is being performed. At the last minute the sacrificial animal is changed from the rival to the poet/lover. Because of this good fortune a Ghazal can be composed.

fikr1 aa jaati hai tarsiil2 ke sooraj ke tale3
jab koi saaya nikaltaa hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.reason, thought 2.delivery, transmission (of message) 3.beneath
The transmission/spreading of thought is analogous to the spreading of sunlight. The poet has brought his thought into this mode of spreading. And then a shadow emerges … this could be an agitated thought/doubt or postive development as when shadow/shade is used as a metaphor for protection. In either case, this is when a Ghazal is written.

daavat1-e pursish2-e ahvaal3 hai yaaroN se kaho
dariyaa jab aaNkhoN ka chaRhtaa hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.invitation 2.enquiry 3.condition, well being
Tell friends that they are invited to visit and enquire about the well being of the poet/lover. When they do, tears will flow like a river. That is how a Ghazal is written.

jazba1-o-fikr2 ke Khaamosh samundar ke tale
jab bhi toofaan machaltaa hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.emotion 2.reason, thought
The poet/lover is silent/stoic like a calm sea. But beneath the calm surface is a storm, a conflict between emotions and reason. When this conflict gets stormy, then a Ghazal is written.

mehrbaaN hotaa hai jab jaan-e mohabbat tarzi
dil-e biimaar1 sambhaltaa hai Ghazal hoti hai 1.stricken (with the disease of love), poet/lover
The soul of love, jaan-e mohabbat, is the beloved. When the beloved shows kindness towards the poet/lover, his heart steadies and he creates a Ghazal.
