بتا اے پیرِ مے خانہ یہ میخانوں پہ کیا گزری

فضا میں ہر طرف کیوں دھجّیاں آوارہ ہیں اُن کی
جنونِ سرفروشی تیرے افسانوں پہ کیا گزری

وِصالِ شمع کی حسرت میں سب بیتاب پھرتے تھے
میں کیا جانوں حضورِ شمع پروانوں پہ کیا گزری

کہو دیر و حرم والو، یہ تم نے کیا فسوں پھونکا
خدا کے گھر پہ کیا بیتی، صنم خانوں پہ کیا گزری

نشانِ برگِ گُل تک بھی نظر آتا نہیں ہم کو
سمجھ میں کچھ نہیں آتا گلستانوں پہ کیا گزری

جہاں نورِ سحر کے بھی قدم جمنے نہ پاتے تھے
بتائے کون آخر اُن شبستانوں پہ کیا گزری

وہ رنگ و نور سے بھر پور بستانوں پہ کیا بیتی
شباب و شعر سے معمور کاشانوں پہ کیا گزری

ابھی تو چشمِ عبرت وقت کی رفتار دیکھے گی
ابھی یہ کس طرح کہہ دیں ستم رانوں پہ کیا گزری

विसाल-ए शमअ की हस्रत में सब बेताब फिरते हैं
मैं क्या जानूं हुज़ूर-ए शमअ परवानौं पे क्या गुज़्री

कहो दैर ओ हरम वालो, ये तुम ने क्या फ़ुसूं फूंका
ख़ुदा के घर पे क्या बीती, सनम ख़ानौं पे क्या गुज़्री

निशान-ए बर्ग-ए दुल तक भी नज़र आता नहीं हम को
समझ में कुछ नहीं आता गुलिस्तानौं पे क्या गुज़्री

जहां नूर-ए सहर के भी क़दम जमने न पाते थे
बताए कौन आख़ेर उन शबिस्तानौं पे क्या गुज़्री

वो रंग ओ नूर से भरपूर बोस्तानौं पे क्या बीती
शबाब ओ शेर से मामूर काशानौं पे क्या गुज़्री

‘bahaar aana’ is symbol of arrival of freedom. ‘deevaane’ are those who were passionate about freedom. He is concerned about passionate freedom fighters and also about poets/writers, his friends and colleagues who had been writing passionately about communal harmony.

There are two possible interpretations. Tinkling of the goblet and flask could be a sign of celebration or their clashing could be a sign of conflict. Thus, why are you celebrating so early, O, tavern keeper, just look at what is happening to the tavern. Or, as soon as freedom arrived, there was conflict between hindu and muslim, why are you celebrating, just look at what is going on.

During the struggle for independence there were many people passionate enough about freedom to be ready to offer their lives. Their stories were written and are now shredded and scattered all around. Whatever happened to that passion.

Light of dawn is the dawn of freedom and like a young child it is still unsteady on its feet and this calamity has befallen. Who can tell what all has happened to our homes.
