All I could gather from one of her books is that she grew up in an orthodox, middle class, muslim family in which women’s education was not considered necessary. She never-the-less persisted, getting an MA and was working towards her PhD at the time of publication (1982) of her book of Ghazal ‘buu-e saman’. At the time she was teaching (probably in some university) in naii dehli. This Ghazal is a part of a collection of five with the refrain ‘lagta hai ke tum ho’. At the time of writing (1982) it was still unconventional and difficult for women to write openly about love. This builds on the groundbreaking work on feminist poets.

When the fragrant breeze of dawn caresses her, it awakens love which strikes like lightning, then she remembers/misses him.

sar rakh ke jo patthar pe kabhi raah-e-alam1 meN
kuchh niiNd si aa jaaye to lagta hai ke tum ho 1.path of/state of sorrow/pain
When the poet is in a state of sorrow/pain and lays down to rest, even with a hard rock as her pillow and she thinks of him, she can fall into a gentle slumber.

jab shaam-e-mulaqaat1 paRosi ke makaaN se
aavaaz koi aaye to lagta hai ke tum ho 1.evening visit
It is conventional that the lover does not visit the beloved. But he might call upon the neighbour just as an excuse to get near her house. Thus, in the evening, when he comes to call on the neighbour and she hears his voice, she misses him.
