aaftaab – gaytri mantra – iqbal

aaftab (gaytri mantra) – mohammed iqbal

Click here for overall comments and on any passage for meanings and discussion. Iqbal re-composed this in Urdu inspired by the Sanskrit “Gaytri Mantra” – Ode to the Sun. This melodious composition is inspired by it, re-creates the spirit of the original but is not necessarily a close translation. It has the same abject subservience that the original has. I include it to illustrate the transformation of Iqbal from accepting a wide range of thinking (aaftab, naya shivala, saare jahaaN se achha) to a narrow, exclusionary and incendiary (shikva, aazadi e afkaar).

O god, the protector, the basis of all life, who is self-existent, who is free from all pains and whose contact frees the soul from all troubles, who pervades the universe and sustains all, the creator and energizer of the whole universe, the giver of happiness, who is worthy of acceptance, the most excellent, who is pure and the purifier of all, let us embrace that very god, so that he may direct our mental faculties in the right direction.
