آج کیوں اِس قدر اندھیرا ہے
دل کو کیوں رنج و غم نے گھیرا ہے
شام بے نور، گل ہیں پژمردہ
بزم سے کس نے منہ کو پھیرا ہے

ہند کا آفتاب ڈوب گیا
قوم کا ماہتاب ڈوب گیا
موت کے دائمی سمندر میں
گوہرِ لاجواب ڈوب گیا

امنِ عالم کا پیشوا نہ رہا
نئے بھارت کا رہنما نہ رہا
رات اندھیری ہے سامنے طوفاں
کشتی باقی ہے ناخدا نہ رہا

غم سے سوزِ حیات باقی ہے
بس یہی کائنات باقی ہے
ساتھیو صبح کی دعا مانگو
بجھ گئی شمع رات باقی ہے

आज क्यूं इस क़दर अंधेरा है
दिल को क्यूं रंज ओ ग़म ने घेरा है
शाम बे-नूर, गुल हैं पज़्श्मुर्दा
बज़्म से किस ने मुंह को फेरा है

हिंद का आफ़्ताब डूब गया
क़ौम का माहताब डूब गया
मौत के दा’एमी समंदर में
गौहर-ए लाजवाब डूब गया

अम्न-ए आलम का पेश्वा न रहा
नये भारत का रहनुमा न रहा
रात अंधेरी है सामने तूफ़ां
कश्ती बाक़ी है नाख़ुदा न रहा

ग़म से सोज़-ए हयात बाक़ी है
बस यही का’एनात बाक़ी है
साथियो सुबह की दुआ मांगो
बुझ गई शम’अ रात बाक़ी है

Born in agra, raised in lucknow and some in tehran, but finally settled in hyderabad. Poet, translator, fiction writer. Earned a D.Litt, perhaps in urdu. Scholar of faarsi and arabi. There are at least six collections of nazm and Ghazal. She appears to have been very progressive and India loving poet.

dil ko kyuN ranj-o-Gham2 ne ghera hai
shaam be-noor3, gul4 haiN pazshmurda5
bazm6 se kis ne muNh ko phera7 hai 1.so much 2.pain and sorrow 3.without light, dark 4.rose, flowers 5.wilted 6.gathering 7.turned away
Why is there such darkness today. Why is the heart overwhelmed by pain and sorrow. The night is dark and flowers are wilted. Who has turned away from this gathering.

hind ka aafataab1 Doob gaya
qaum2 ka maahtaab3 Doob gaya
maut ke daa’emi4 samundar meN
gauhar5-e laajaavaab6 Doob gaya 1.sun 2.homeland 3.moon 4.eternal, endless 5.jewel 6.unequalled
The sun of hindostan has set. The moon of the homeland is gone. Into the endless ocean of death, the unequalled jewel of hindostand has sunk.

amn1-e aalam2 ka peshva3 na raha
naye bhaarat ka rahnuma4 na raha
raat andheri hai saamne toofaaN5
kashti baaqi6 hai naaKhuda7 na raha 1.peace 2.world 3.leader, first in line 4.guide 5.storm 6.remaining 7.boatman
The leader of world peace is no more. The guide of bhaarat is gone. The night is dark and there are storm ahead. The boat remains, but the boatman is no more.

Gham se soz1-e hayaat2 baaqi3 hai
bas yahi kaa’enaat4 baaqi hai
saathiyo subah ki dua maaNgo
bujh gaii sham’a5 raat baaqi hai 1.fire, pain 2.life 3.remaining 4.universe, world 5.lamp
Because of sorrow the fire/pain of life remains. This is the only world we have left. Comrades, pray of the light of dawn. The lamp has been put out and it is still dark.
