Click here for background and on any passage for word meanings and explanatory discussion. josh malihabadi (1898-1982) is known as – shaa’er-e inqelaab – poet of revolution. His nazm are fiery, passionate, and full of energy. His Ghazal and rubaaii are equally good. He was a secular humanist writing sharply and irreverently against colonialism, abuse of power, injustice and orthodoxy. This nazm follows the structure of Ghazal and is linked to several others of the theme and radeef ‘aaj ki raat’ on the Refrain page. I imagine this to have been composed specifically for a celebratory gathering or a mushaa’era.

  1. ایک موہوم سا نقطہ ہے جہاں ارض و سما
ایسا ایک دائرہ ہے رطل گراں آج کی رات

Could this also be described as pitting the night’s vastness against that of the universe? For this mauhoom would be construed to mean “small/insignificant”. The night is a circle with such a vast radius that arz o samaa is but a mere dot in it. This also follows the scheme of ghazal where the poet seems excited by the possibilities of the night under discussion.
