اس بختِ نارسا سے اذیت کشیدہ ہوں

نے کام کا کسی کے نہ مجھ کو کسی سے کام

इस बख़्त-ए ना-रसा से अज़िय्यत-कशीदा हूँ

कू ख़ंदा कू तबस्सुम ओ कू फ़ुर्सत-ए सुख़न
इस अंजुमन में हैं लब-ए हस्रत-गज़ीदा हूँ

ने काम का किसी के न मुझ को किसी से काम

किस की उमीद पर कोई दम आरमीदा हूँ

गुलचीं अबस निगाह रखे है मेरी तरफ़

अए उम्र ज़िंदगी से मैं दामन-कशीदा हूँ

बहुतों का इस चमन में मैं अब ख़ारवीदा हूँ

He graciously quotes Khwaaja miir dard (1721-1785), a junior contemporary. Ghalib’s Ghazal ‘maiN andaliib-e gulshan-e naa-aafriida huN’ is in the same style and all such Ghazal are linked to ‘Ghalib peshrau o ham-asar’.

Neither do I have anything to do with anyone, nor am I useful to anyone. I am puzzled why I have been created (and sent) here (in this world).

Neither is life stable nor can I depend on living. With what hope can I be comfortable even for a moment.

My life can be finished in short order. I am like a tear drop that is at the tip of eyelashes ready to drop.

‘raNg-e pariida’ – colour gone away is colourless, faded, wilted. The flower picker uselessly casts his glance towards me. In this garden I am like a faded/wilted rose.

aye umr zindagii se maiN daaman-kashiida4 huN 1.entrust 2.collar 3.death 4.pull the hem of the robe – stay away from
Convention is that the mad/passionate lover tears his collar in distress. Here he wants to give his collar for safekeeping in the hands of Death, so that he is saved from extreme distress. O Life, I want to pull away from (am tired of) living.

haaN in tere GhulaamoN meN be-zar3 Khariida huN 1.because of 2.value, respect 3.without gold/money
You (O beloved) do not know my value because among your slaves/devotees I am the one that you have obtained without having to pay anything.

bahutoN4 kaa is chaman meN maiN ab Khaaraviida5 huN 1.bloom 2.breeze 3.union (with the beloved) 4.many 5.itching, scratching, pricking thorn
Convention is that nasiim-e sub’h blows and wakes up (causes to bloom) buds that are sleeping overnight. Here there is parallelism with ‘nasiim-e vasl’ and the poet/lover’s heart which has to bloom. Thus, O nasiim-e vasl, blow sometime towards me so that my heart may bloom. I am a thorn in the side of many in this garden (this could be because he is constantly wailing and others are tired of him).

varna5 na paa-shikasta6 na dast7-e buriida8 huN 1.concern, being mindful 2.traditions, respect 3.steps 4.dare 5.otherwise 6.broken feet 7.hand 8.cut off
Being mindful of traditions, I dare not take any steps towards her, otherwise, I neither my legs are broken nor my are my hands cut off.

t’aaziim4 ko aduu5 ki maiN teGh6-e Khamiida7 huN 1.rival 2.hospitality, courtesy 3.disinclination, hesitation 4.respect, greeting 5.rival 6.sword 7.curved, bent
Bending, bowing is a sign of showing respect. A bent sword is a different story … implying showing respect but not really because the sword cuts heads off. Thus, I do not have any hesitation in showing courtesy to the rival. I bow to him respectfully, like a curved sword.

tuufaaN3 hua bhii jo Tuk4 ek aab-diida5 huN 1.leisure, time, freedom 2.cloud 3.storm, rain 4.moment 5.teary eyed
This is addressed to the cloud, because it brings rain which is akin to crying. The poet/lover’s crying is characterized as a tuufaan/storm. Who has freedom/permission to cry here, O cloud. Even if I become teary eyed, it rains like a storm only for a short while.

O friends, how can I get my mind to agree with you. It does not agree with itself i.e., I am like a wild beast which is afraid of its own shadow and runs away from itself.

What is the use of asking about haatim’s pain, O friends. Whatever condition I may be in, after all, I am calamity stricken.
