باعثِ ترکِ ملاقات بتاتے بھی نہیں

منتظر ہیں دمِ رخصت کہ یہ مر جائے تو جائیں
پھر یہ احسان کہ ہم چھوڑ کے جاتے بھی نہیں

سر اٹھاؤ تو سہی آنکھ ملاؤ تو سہی
نشۂ مے بھی نہیں نیند کے ماتے بھی نہیں

کیا کہا پھر تو کہو ہم نہیں سنتے تیری
نہیں سنتے تو ہم ایسوں کو سناتے بھی نہیں

خوب پردہ ہے کہ چلمن سے لگے بیٹھے ہیں
صاف چھپتے بھی نہیں سامنے آتے بھی نہیں

مجھ سے لاغر تری آنکھوں میں کھٹکتے تو رہے
تجھ سے نازک مری نظروں میں سماتے بھی نہیں

دیکھتے ہی مجھے محفل میں یہ ارشاد ہوا
کون بیٹھا ہے اسے لوگ اٹھاتے بھی نہیں

फिर ये एहसान कि हम छोड़ के जाते भी नहीं

सर उठाओ तो सही आँख मिलाओ तो सही
नश्शा-ए-मय भी नहीं नींद के माते भी नहीं

क्या कहा फिर तो कहो हम नहीं सुनते तेरी
नहीं सुनते तो हम ऐसों को सुनाते भी नहीं

ख़ूब पर्दा है कि चिलमन से लगे बैठे हैं
साफ़ छुपते भी नहीं सामने आते भी नहीं

मुझ से लाग़र तेरी आँखों में खटकते तो रहे
तुझ से नाज़ुक मेरी नज़्रों में समाते भी नहीं

देखते ही मुझे महफ़िल में ये इरशाद हुआ
कौन बैठा है उसे लोग उठाते भी नहीं

हो चुका क़तअ-ए तअल्लुक़ तो जफ़ाएँ क्यूँ हों
जिन को मत्लब नहीं रहता वो सताते भी नहीं

ज़ीस्त से तंग हो ऐ ‘दाग़’ तो जीते क्यूँ हो
जान प्यारी भी नहीं जान से जाते भी नहीं

Towards the end of his life he lived and died in hyderabad. His Ghazals tend to be light and romantic but their language and musicality lend themselves to singing.

The beloved objects to coming (to meet the poet/lover) and does not ask him to come either. She does not even explain the reason for putting a stop to their trysts.

phir ye ehsaan4 keh ham chhoR ke jaate bhi nahiN 1.waiting, anticipation 2.time of 3.departure 4.obligation
In urdu poetic tradition the beloved does not usually visit the poet/lover but most certainly comes to his death bed. She is restlessly waiting for the time of departure … waiting for him to die so she can leave. On top of that she is laying down this obligation that “I am here, I will not leave you”.

Why do you not raise your head and look me in the eye. After all your eyes are neither drooping with intoxication of wine, nor are they defeated by lack of sleep.

kya kaha phir to kaho ham nahiN sunte teri
nahiN sunte to ham aisoN ko sunaate bhi nahiN What did you say, say it again, “you will not listen to anything that I have to say”. OK then, if you won’t listen, then I will stop talking to you.

Khuub parda hai keh chilman se lage baiThe haiN
saaf chhupte bhi nahiN saamne aate bhi nahiN This is an amusing way to observing parda, that you are sitting so close to the curtain (which I can see through). Neither do you veil yourself nor do you come out.

mujh se laaGhar1 teri aaNkhoN meN khaTakte to rahe
tujh se naazuk2 meri nazroN meN samaate3 bhi nahiN 1.lean, thin, weak 2.delicate 3.contained in, fulfilling, satisfying
Lean/thin men are not cosidered desirable probably because their leanness is attributed to hunger/want. The poet/lover is to “get even” in a “lover’s tiff”. If my lean-ness irritates your eyes, then your delicacy isn’t pleasant for my eyes either.

dekhte hi mujhe mahfil meN ye irshaad hua
kaun baiThaa hai use log uThaate bhi nahiN As soon as she saw me in her gathering she said, “who is this, why doesn’t someone throw him out”.

ho chuka qat’a1-e ta’alluq2 to jafaayeN3 kyuN hoN
jin ko matlab4 nahiN rahta vo sataate bhi nahiN 1.break 2.relationship 3.cruelties 4.concern
If you have broken off our relationship, why do you continue to inflict pain on me. Those who don’t have any concern do not bother either.
