چھلکا بھی گئے ۔ اسرار الحق مجاز

تسکینِ دلِ محزوں نہ ہوئی وہ سعئ کرم فرما بھی گئے

اس سعئ کرم کو کیا کہیے بہلا بھی گئے تڑپا بھی گئے

ہم عرضِ وفا بھی کر نہ سکے کچھ کہہ نہ سکے کچھ سُن نہ سکے

یاں ہم نے زباں ہی کھولی تھی واں آنکھ جھُکی شرما بھی گئے

آشفتگیٔ وحشت کی قسم حیرت کی قسم حسرت کی قسم

اب آپ کہیں کچھ یا نہ کہیں ہم رازِ تبسُّم پا بھی گئے

رودادِ غمِ اُلفت اُن سے ہم کیا کہتے کیوں کر کہتے

اِک حرف نہ نکلا ہونٹوں سے اور آنکھ میں آنسو آ بھی گئے

اربابِ جنوں پر فرقت میں اب کیا کہئے کیا کیا گزری

آئے تھے سوادِ اُلفت میں کچھ کھو بھی گئے کچھ پا بھی گئے

یہ رنگِ بہارِ عالم ہے کیوں فِکر ہے تجھ کو اے ساقی

محفل تو تری سونی نہ ہوئی کچھ اُٹھ بھی گئے کچھ آ بھی گئے

اُس محفلِ کیف و مستی میں اُس انجمنِ عرفانی میں

سب جام بکف بیٹھے ہی رہے ہم پی بھی گئے چھلکا بھی گئے

छलका भी गए – अस्रार-उल-हक़्क़ मजाज़

तस्कीन-ए-दिल-ए-महज़ूँ न हुई वो सई-ए-करम फ़रमा भी गए

इस सई-ए-करम को क्या कहिए बहला भी गए तड़पा भी गए

हम अर्ज़-ए-वफ़ा भी कर न सके कुछ कह न सके कुछ सुन न सके

याँ हम ने ज़बाँ ही खोली थी वाँ आँख झुकी शरमा भी गए

आशुफ़्तगी-ए-वहशत की क़सम हैरत की क़सम हसरत की क़सम

अब आप कहें कुछ या न कहें हम राज़-ए-तबस्सुम पा भी गए

रूदाद-ए-ग़म-ए-उल्फ़त उन से हम क्या कहते क्यूँकर कहते

एक हर्फ़ न निकला होंटों से और आँख में आँसू आ भी गए

अरबाब-ए-जुनूँ पर फ़ुर्क़त में अब क्या कहिए क्या क्या गुज़री

आए थे सवाद-ए-उल्फ़त में कुछ खो भी गए कुछ पा भी गए

ये रंग-ए-बहार-ए-आलम है क्यूँ फ़िक्र है तुझ को ऐ साक़ी

महफ़िल तो तिरी सूनी न हुई कुछ उठ भी गए कुछ आ भी गए

उस महफ़िल-ए-कैफ़-ओ-मस्ती में उस अंजुमन-ए-इरफ़ानी में

सब जाम-ब-कफ़ बैठे ही रहे हम पी भी गए छलका भी गए

He received his BA from aligaRh after interruptions in earlier schooling. He developed close relationships with progressives and was a major force in the Progressive Writers’ Association. He lived in aligaRh, dehli and lucknow working for radio stations, editing magazines on and off but with no steady income. He met with a rather tragic end at the young age of 44. This is largely a Ghazal of romance.

is saii-e karam ko kya kahiye bahla6 bhi gaye taRpa7 bhi gaye

The melancholy heart was not consoled although she came and tried to bestow kindness. What can I say about that effort, she consoled (fake consolation), caused great agitation and left.

yaaN hum ne zabaaN hi kholi thi vaaN aaNkh jhuki sharma bhi gaye

This is the way of the world, this is normal, why are you worried O saaqi. Some left but others came, your tavern was not deserted.

sab jaam6 ba-kaf7 baiThe hi rahe hum pii bhi gaye chhalka8 bhi gaye

In this gathering of pleasure and wine, in this association of learning, everyone sat holding their cup, I came, drank, spilled and left.
