چھپائے نہ بنے ۔ جگرؔ مرادآبادی

زخم وہ دل پہ لگا ہے کہ دکھائے نہ بنے
اور چاہیں کہ چھپا لیں تو چھپائے نہ بنے

ہائے بیچارگیِ عشق کہ اس محفل میں
سر جھکائے نہ بنے آنکھ ملائے نہ بنے

یہ سمجھ لو کہ غمِ عشق کی تکمیل ہوئی
ہوش میں آ کے بھی پھر ہوش میں آئے نہ بنے

کس قدر حسن بھی مجبورِ کشاکش ہے کہ آہ
منھ چھپائے نہ بنے سامنے آئے نہ بنے

ہائے وہ عالمِ پُر شوق کہ جس وقت جگرؔ
اس کی تصویر بھی سینے سے لگائے نہ بنے

किस क़दर हुस्न भी मज्बूर-ए कशाकश है के आह
मुंह छुपाए न बने सामने आए न बने

हाए वो आलम-ए पुर शौक़ के जिस वक़्त जिगर
उस की तस्वीर भी सीने से लगाए न बने

Many of his compositions have been put to music and sung by great singers. This short Ghazal is modeled after Ghalib’s “nukta chiiN hai Gham-e dil”.

Alas, the helplessness of the lover that in this (the beloved’s) gathering, he cannot look down (because he is eager to look at her) and cannot look up at her (because that is considered improper and/or it will make her angry.

‘hosh meN aana’ can mean becoming sober and also “coming to one’s senses, as in getting wise”. Just think of this as the climax of love – even if you are sober you cannot come to your senses – you cannot help but be head over heels in love with her.
