Click here for background and on any passage for word meanings and explanatory discussion. josh malihabadi (1898-1982) a fiery poet writing courageously about anti-colonialism and about communal harmony. He also rebels agains orthodox religiosity and manages to use the backdrop of karbala to construct a secular message about resistance to injustice and oppression. deen-e aadmiyat is a long nazm posted in four parts. In the first section josh raves and rants against orthodoxy and its attempt at dividing humanity into sects/religions. In section 2 he heaps contempt on “old men” with closed minds. In section 3 he distinguishes between a demanding selfish god (man masquerading as god) and the “real” god with a larger universal/humanist outlook. In a short concluding section josh calls for action – to create a “new way” of humanism.
1
1.slavery 2.thirst 3.beautiful, flattering 4.words 5.offering, prashad
This “false” god demands slavery from man. It has an insatiable thirst for words of flattery. It demands bread and sweets as offerings/prashad. He makes you chant his name counting on your fingers every day.

2
sar niguN1 rahta hai jo ahl-e fitan2 ke saamne
jis ki kuchh chalti nahiN hai ahrman3 ke saamne
raundta4 rahta hai jis ki Khair5 ko iblees6-e shar7
chaabte haiN jis ke naadaarauN8 ke bheje ahl-e zar9
1.bowed 2.people of mischief, miscreants, oppressors 3.devil 4.tramples 5.gifts 6.satan of 7.evil 8.needy 9.people of wealth
This “false” god bows his head before oppressors. His will does not stand up to the devil’s. The satan of evil can roll over any of his gifts. This is a god whose needy people are eaten alive by capital.

3
gurg1 seerat2 daakuauN ko taaj pahnaata hai jo
mominauN3 ko kaafirauN4 se bheek maNgvaata hai jo
“mujko poojo, mujko chaaho” ki sada deta hai jo
jo na chaahe us ko dozaKh5 ki saza6 deta hai jo
1.wolf 2.nature 3.virtuous 4.evil (these two words are conventionally used in the religious sense of believers and non-believers. Given the full context and his disdain for all blind faith, I am sure that josh is not using them in the conventional context) 5.hell 6.punishment
The “false” god places a crown on the heads of robbers (politicians) who have the nature of wolves. He forces the virtuous to beg from the evil. He demands that he be loved and prayed to, and if someone does not do this, he punishes them with hell.

4
hukm hai jis ke yuN uNgli hilaana chaahiye
jab jamaahi1 aaye to chuTki bajaana chaahiye
mar ke jalna ya kisi darya meN bahna chaahiye
chheeNk jab aaye to ma’an2 alhamd3 kahna chaahiye
1.yawn 2.of necessity, by order 3.praise be to (god)
josh now turns to making fun of every day rituals which have taken on the aura of sanctity – rituals such as snapping fingers upon yawning, having to say “alhamd o lillah” upon sneezing and specific ways of funerals – all rather meaningless rituals.

5
jo agar yuN Kham1 na ho gardan to karta hai bhasam2
yuN jabiN3 ko Tek do to maa’el4-e jood5 o karam6
yuN ho maathe par lakeereN to dua ho mustajaab7
muNh phula kar yuN agar tonbi8 bajaao to savaab9
1.bent, bowed 2.burnt to ashes 3.forehead, brow 4.inclined to 5.generosity 6.munificence 7.accepted 8.snake charmer’s gourd 9.rewards of virtue
The “false” god demands that unless you bend your head this way, you will be burnt to ashes. On the other hand if you touch your forehead to his feet (or to the ground) he will be inclined to generosity and munificence. When you pray, if your brow is wrinkled thus and such, then your prayers are accepted. If you blow the “tonbi” in this particular fashion then you accumulate rewards of virtue.

6
is tarah zulfeN banaane, yuN katarne meN savaab
is tarah ulTe laTak kar yaad karne meN najaat1
jis ke aage raqs2 karna gungunaana3 hai haraam4
jis ke aage qahqaha5 kya, muskuraana hai haraam
1.deliverance 2.dance 3.hum, sing 4.sinful, not permitted 5.laughter
The “false” god demands that if you cut your hair this way, trim your beard that way you accumulate virtue. If you hang upside down and chant you gain deliverance. Dancing or humming/singing before him is not allowed. It is forbidden not just to laugh out loud, but even to smile before him.

7
jis ke aage kaaNpna, aaNsu bahaana hai savaab
jis ke aage sar jhuka kar giRgiRaana1 hai savaab
jis ke aage zamzama2, paimana3, saaqi, sub haraam
sirf aab-e sard4, naan-e garm5, baaqi sub haraam
1.implore, beseech, beg 2.gurgling sound (of wine being poured) 3.cup (of wine) 4.cold water 5.warm bread
The “false” god demands that you tremble, shed tears before him to be virtuous, that you bow your head and implore favours from him. Before him flask or cup or winebearer are all forbidden. Only cold water and warm bread is allowed, the rest is not.

8
must1 hota hai jo yuN insaan ki tahseen2 par
phan uTha kar jhoomta hai naag jaise been par
fitrat3-e insaaN ka Khaaliq4 ho ke bhi jo subah o shaam
be-Khata5 insaan se leta hai kya kya inteqaam6
1.intoxicated 2.tribute, flattery 3.nature of 4.creator 5.faultless 6.retribution, vengeance
The “false” god seems to exult in flattery and is intoxicated by it like a cobra before swaying before a flute. Even though he is (supposed to be) the creator of the nature (characteristics) of man, if man follows this nature (through no fault of his own) god takes vengeance out on him.

9
gaah1 aata hai yahaN toofan par ho kar savaar
gaah Ghusse meN hilaata hai zamiN ko baar baar
jo agar Khush hai to deta hai bashar2 ko aNgabiN3
Daal kar toRi khajureN, koray4 pinDay5 ke hasiN6
1.one moment 2.man 3.honey 4.untouched/virgin 5.body 6.beauties
One moment he arrives mounted on a storm. The next, he shakes the earth again and again. If he is happy with man, he grants him honey and lays before him already harvested dates and beauties of untouched bodies.

10
aur agar bigRa1 to chhup jaata hai chehra jhaag2 meN
aadmi ko jhoNk deta hai dahakti3 aag meN
gaah4 hota hai musir5 inaam par, ehsaan par
peesta hai daaNt rah rah kar kabhi insaan par
1.displeased 2.foam 3.blazing 4.one moment 5.insistent
If he is displeased, he foams at the mouth with anger (so much so that his face is hidden behind the foam). He throws man into a blazing fire. One moment he insists on giving rewards, bestowing favours. Every now and then he grinds his teeth (in anger) at (the transgressions of) man.

11
jis ne laakhauN raahbar1 bheje hidaayat2 ke liye
raund3 Daala jis ne is kasrat4 ko vahdat5 ke liye
Khoon go6 sau baar us ke aastaaN7 par bah gaya
phir bhi jo apne mission meN fail ho kar rah gaya
1.guides/prophets 2.instruction, guidance 3.stomped upon 4.many 5.one-ness 6.even though 7.threshold
The “false” god has sent lakhs of guides/prophets to instruct humanity. It is an Islamic claim that god has sent one lakh twenty five thousand prophets. I am not entirely sure if josh means to call that a false god – because his description of the “real” god in Section 2 is remarkably close to the Islamic god. He has s. tomped on many to establish his unique status. Even though a lot of blood has spilled at his door, he has failed in his mission (to establish his monopoly).

12
jis ki kishti joo1-e sartaabi2 ki rau3 meN bah gayii
jis Khuda ki zarb-e aaKhir4 bhi uchaT5 kar rah gayii
chaar din jo shaad6 hai aur chaar din na-shaad7 hai
ye Khuda to aadmi ke zahn8 ki eejaad9 hai
1.river of 2.pride, hubris 3.flow 4.final blow 5.glance off, skipped 6.happy 7.unhappy 8.mind 9.invention
Islam claims that mohammed is the final messenger. Thus, I am not sure if josh means mohammed’s attempt by “zarb-e aaKhir”. The boat of the “false” god went down the flow of the river of hubris. Even his final blow glanced off the target. He is happy for a few days and unhappy for the next few. Such a god is an invention of the human mind.

13

1.superstition 2.dear friends 3.ages 4.passed 5.mind of 6.society (humanity) 7.stricken with TB, diseased 8.creator 9.created
What kind of a storm of superstition is this, I am greatly surprised. Friends this is not god, it is man putting on the disguise of god. For long ages now the mind of humanity has been diseased. Friends, such a god is not a creator, it is created.
