گلستاں چپ ہے ۔ مخدوم محی الدین

 

تم گلستاں سے گئے ہو تو گلستاں چپ ہے

شاخِ گل کھوئی ہوئی مرغِ خوش الہاں چپ ہے

 

اُفقِ دِل پہ دکھائی نہیں دیتی ہے دھنک

غمزدہ موسمِ گل، ابرِ بہاراں چپ ہے

 

عالمِ تشنگیِ بادہ گساراں مت پوچھ

میکدہ دور ہے مینا ئے زرافشاں چپ ہے

 

اور آگے نہ بڑھا قصہِ دِل قصہِ غم

دھڑکنیں چپ ہیں، سرشکِ سرِ مژگاں چپ ہے

 

شہر میں ایک قیامت تھی، قیامت نہ رہی

حشر خاموش ہوا، فتنہ دوراں چپ ہے

 

نہ کسی آہ کی آواز نہ زنجیر کا شور

آج کیا ہو گیا زنداں میں، کہ زنداں چپ ہے

गुलिस्तां चुप है – मख़दूम मोहिउद्दीन

 

तुम गुलिस्तां से गए हो तो गुलिस्तां चुप है

शाख़ ए गुल खोई हुई मुर्ग़ ए ख़ुश अल्हां चुप है

 

उफ़क़ ए दिल पे दिखाई नहीं देती है धनक

ग़मज़दा मोसम ए गुल, अब्र ए बहारां चुप है

 

आलम ए तिश्नगी ए बादा गुसारां मत पूछ

मैकदा दूर है मीना ए ज़र अफ़्शां चुप है

 

और आगे ना बढ़ा क़िस्सा ए दिल, क़िस्सा ए ग़म

धड़कनें चुप हैं, सरश्क ए सर ए मिज़्शगां चुप है

 

शहर में एक क़ियामत थी, क़ियामत ना रही

हश्र ख़ामोश हुआ, फ़ित्ना ए दौरां चुप है

 

ना किसी आह की आवाज़ ना ज़ंजीर का शोर

आज क्या हो गया ज़िन्दां में के ज़िन्दां चुप है

Click here for overall comments and on any passage for meanings and discussion. This Ghazal bemoans the absence of the beloved but it gets transformed completely if the beloved is interpreted to be new social order/revolutionary demand for change and the intense thirst of the revelers the deprivation felt by revolutionaries and the oppressed. Now that you are gone the garden is quite desolate. Even flower-laden boughs are lost (“shaaKh e gul khoi hui” – lost in memories and longing for the beloved) and song birds are silent.

Ghamzada5 mosam-e gul6, abr-e baharaaN7 chup hai

Rainbow is a sign of joy/hope. As far as the eye can see – to the horizon of the heart, there is no rainbow. The spring is forlorn and clouds that normally rain (like blessing) bring no joy.

Ask not about the parched thirst of the revelers (comrades). The tavern is at a distance, the sparkling goblet empty.

Do not carry on with the tale of your heart, a tale of woe. The heart has ceased to beat, the eyelashes gone dry. The time for crying is past, the time for same old stories of owe is done, now is the time for action.

There used to be joyous tumult in the town, but not any more (now that the beloved has left). The joy is gone, playful mischief/demonstrations and demand for justice is quiet.

No sound of moans, no clang of chain, how strange! even the prison has fallen silent. Lovers are pictured as prisoners in chains. They are not moaning any more and no clang of chains is heard. The prison, even though full of lovers, has fallen silent.
