اقبال ۔ فیض احمد فیض
آیا ہمارے دیس میں اِک خوش نوا فقیر
آیا اور اپنی دُھن سے غزلخواں گذر گیا
سنسان راہیں خلق سے آباد ہو گئیں
ویران میکدوں کا نصیبہ سنور گیا
تھیں چند ہی نگاہیں جو اُس تک پہنچ سکیں
پر اُسکا گیت سب کے دِلوں میں اُتر گیا
اب دور جا چکا ہے وہ شاہِ گدا نما
اور پھر سے اپنے دیس کی راہیں اُداس ہیں
چند اِک کو یاد ہے کوئی اُسکی ادائے خاص
دو اِک نگاہیں چند عزیزوں کے پاس ہیں

आया हमारे देस में एक ख़ुश नवा फ़क़ीर
आया और अपनी धुन से ग़ज़ल ख़्वाँ गुज़र गया
सुनसान राहें ख़ल्क़ से आबाद हो गईं
वीरान मैकदऔं का नसीबा संवर गया
थीं चंद ही निगाहें जो उस तक पहुंच सकीं
पर उसका गीत सब के दिलों में उतर गया
अब दूर जा चुका है वो शाह ए गदा नुमा
और फिर से अपने देस की राहें उदास हैं
चंद एक को याद है कोई उसकी अदा ए ख़ास
दो एक निगाहें चंद अज़ीज़ों के पास हैं

Click here for overall comments and on any passage for meanings and discussion. faiz, like iqbal, was from Sialkot. faiz was 27 when iqbal died in 1938. iqbal’s scholarship and linguistic power deserves a fulsome tribute. That aside, there is a progressive and a reactionary phase to his writings. Both faiz and maKhdoom, having lived through his progressive phase must have been very kind in overlooking his reactionary phase. Personally, I must plead guilty to a lack of such kindness and I deal elsewhere with a response to his extremely reactionary composition, “shikwa”.

There arrived in our country a mendicant of sweet voice. He came and with his wondrous tune, excelled as a Ghazal sayer.
sunsaan raaheN4 Khalq5 se aabad6 ho gaeeN
veeraan7 maikadoN8 ka naseeba9 saNwar10 gaya 4.deserted pathways (of thought) 5.populace 6.filled with 7.deserted 8.tavern 9.fate, fortune 10.refreshed, renewed
Pathways of learning, long deserted, began to be freqented by the populace. The fortune of deserted taverns (of learning) blossomed. iqbal is credited with having propounded a “new” philosophy of “Khudi” which is a complex mixture of self-reliance, ego, self-awareness.
Khudi ko kar baland itna ke har taqdeer se pahle
Khuda bande se Khud poochhe, bata teri raza kya hai
Do not fall victim to the concept of fate but raise your self-reliance to such a height that god himself ask, “what is your wish?”

par uska geet sab ke diloN meN utar gaya11.eyes, sight
There were only a few who could reach the level of his vision, but his music/song made a home in every heart.
ab duur ja chuka hai vo shah12-e gada-numa13
aur phir se apne des ki raaheN udaas haiN12.king 13.with the looks of a mendicant
Now that king in the garb of a mendicant has gone to far off lands and the pathways of our country are sad/desolate once again.
chand ek ko yaad hai koi uski adaa-e Khaas14
do ek nigaaheN chand azizoN15 ke paas haiN14.special/unique style 15.relatives, loved ones
A few still remember his unique style. Only a few friends have reached and understood one or two of his insights.
