jahaaN aur bhi haiN – mohammed iqbal

jahaaN aur bhi haiN – mohammed iqbal

Click here for overall comments and on any she’r for word meanings and discussion. This Ghazal has sufi interpretations but can also be read as an energetic call to a higher vision, to action, taking responsibility and moving forward. I like the latter interpretation a lot more.

sitaarauN se aage jahaaN aur bhi haiN
abhi ishq ke imtehaaN aur bhi haiN
Just like there are many worlds beyond the stars, there are many trials of (divine) love to be faced. And just like the worlds extend to infinity and beyond, the trials of love will never end (except in ‘fana’ – a sufi concept of obliteration of self and union with the beloved). The other interpretation is that there are many more worlds to conquer. Your love/effort has yet to face many more trials. This is similar to Ghalib’s she’r …

There is no lack of opportunity (no void) in these surroundings. There are many caravans/journeys to undertake. A clear call to action to a higher vision.

Do not be satisfied with this material world that you can sense and feel. There are many more (spiritual) gardens and nests to explore.
