jahaaN aur bhi haiN – mohammed iqbal

raahat fateh ali KhaaN singing

jahaaN aur bhi haiN – mohammed iqbal

Click here for overall comments and on any she’r for word meanings and discussion. This Ghazal has sufi interpretations but can also be read as an energetic call to a higher vision, to action, taking responsibility and moving forward. I like the latter interpretation a lot more.

sitaarauN se aage jahaaN aur bhi haiN
abhi ishq ke imtehaaN aur bhi haiN
Just like there are many worlds beyond the stars, there are many trials of (divine) love to be faced. And just like the worlds extend to infinity and beyond, the trials of love will never end (except in ‘fana’ – a sufi concept of obliteration of self and union with the beloved). The other interpretation is that there are many more worlds to conquer. Your love/effort has yet to face many more trials. This is similar to Ghalib’s she’r …
manzil ek balandi par aur hum banaa sakte

yahaaN saiNkRoN kaarvaaN aur bhi haiN
1.empty, devoid 2.atmosphere, ambience, region, surroundings
There is no lack of opportunity (no void) in these surroundings. There are many caravans/journeys to undertake. A clear call to action to a higher vision.

qina’at1 na kar aalam2-e raNg o bu par3

1.contented, satisfied 2.world of 3.colour and smell, senses, material 4.nest, home
Do not be satisfied with this material world that you can sense and feel. There are many more (spiritual) gardens and nests to explore.

agar kho gaya ek nasheman1 to kya Gham
maqaamat2-e aah o fuGhaaN3 aur bhi haiN
1.nest 2.places 3.sighs and wails, crying
Why feel sorry if you lose your shelter. One setback should not hold you back. There are many other places/stages where you will meet similar difficulties. Your purpose is to keep trying even if there are many more occasions/stages of life where you will fail.

tu shaahiN1 hai parvaaz2 hai kaam tera

You are a falcon (free to fly high). Your mission is to fly higher and higher still. There are other skies too, before you, not just this one over the earth.

Those days are gone when I was alone in gatherings, when no one listened to/understood what I had to say. Now there are some who not only listen but are also my confidants.
