یہ کس نے جلوہ دکھا کے آنکھوں میں کر لیا ہے مقام اپنا
یہ کس کو اپنا بنا کے برہم کیا ہے دل نے نِظام اپنا

یہ کس کی باتوں میں آ کے ہم نے کیا ہے بدنام نام اپنا
کہ آج تک آگہی سے عاجز ہے جذبۂ ناتمام اپنا

اگر تمنائے بے خودی کی زباں سے سُن لیں پیام اپنا
تو عارضِ حسن سے اُلٹ دیں نقاب وہ لا کلام اپنا

نگاہِ ساقی سے کہہ رہا ہوں سزا توجہ کی سہ رہا ہوں
شرابِ رحمت کے دور میں بھی کرم سے خالی ہے جام اپنا

یہ رُتبۂ اعتبارِ موزوں، یہ نشّۂ عشقِ چشمِ میگوں
یہ بیخودی کہ پکارتا ہوں کسی کو لیتا ہوں نام اپنا

جہاں میں ہیں خوش نصیب اکثر ہے جن پہ لطفِ نظر سراسر
اگر مقابل ہوں کیا عجب ہے مجھے بھی کر لیں غلام اپنا

نشانۂ حُسن ہو رہا ہے فراق میں عمر کھو رہا ہے
نظر سے فرصت ملے تو دل بھی کرے کوئی انتظام اپنا

ہے منظرِ بزمِ شادؔ و راحت بہ قلبِ مسرور عین نعمت
مذاقِ شعر و سخن ہے اہلِ ادب میں ہے احترام اپنا

ये रुत्बा-ए एतेबार-ए मौज़ूं, ये नश्शा-ए इश्क़-ए चश्म-ए मयगूं
ये बेख़ुदी के पुकारता हुं किसी को लेता हुं नाम अपना

जहाँ में हैं ख़ुश-नसीब अक्सर है जिन पे लुत्फ़-ए नज़र सरासर

Born into a wealthy family, he inherited a printing press, a magazine and considerable wealth. Freed from the need to earn a living he became a poet, painter, musician and writer. Built a large house outside dehli and regularly invited noted poets to mushaa’era. The publication of his collection was arranged posthumously (2006) by his grand-daughter and daughter.

The poet/lover has allowed himself fall for the coquetry of the beloved and brought disrepute upon himself. The disrepute is in the same sense that majnuN was disreputable as a mad man. Even to this day, his unfulfilled desire is not interested in wisdom i.e., it prefers to remain stark raving mad.

If the beloved were to listen to the message of the poet/lover’s mad passion/yearning from his own mouth, then without a word, she would lift the veil from her beautiful face and reveal her full glory.

The poet/lover complains to the saaqi/cup-bearer/beloved that he is suffering from the punishment of inattention. The wine of love is making its rounds, others are receiving their share, but his cup is empty.

The poet/lover has looked into the wine-coloured eyes of the beloved. He is intoxicated with love. His intoxication/love is so intense that it has acquired a high status of trust, proportionate to his passion. In the intensity of passion he has gone into a trance and has lost his identity in the persona of the beloved (could be the divine beloved) so much so that when calls for the beloved, he calls out his own name.

The poet/lover observes that there are many fortunate ones in the world who receive an unadulterated glance of attention from the beloved. He thinks that if he were to come face to face with the beloved, it would not be surprising if she makes him her slave too.
