چشمہ شیریں ہے تو زیرِ سحاب

تیری خوشبو سے معطر ہے جہاں

ہے ریاضِ قدس کا گویا گلاب

معدنِ افضال و احسان و ثواب

اے کلامِ حق تو ہے امّ الکتاب

चश्मा-ए शिरिं है तू ज़ेर-ए सहाब

तू है फाहा ज़ख़्म-ए दिल के वास्ते

एक नुस्ख़ा है पै-ए सद-इज़्तेराब

तेरी ख़ुश्बू से मो’अत्तर है जहां

है रियाज़-ए क़ुद्स का गोया गुलाब

मख़्ज़न-ए इल्म-ए लदुन्नी ला कलाम

म’आदन-ए अफ़्ज़ाल ओ एहसान ओ सवाब

हैं भरे तुझ में जहां के इल्म ओ फ़न

अए कलाम-ए हक़ तु है उम्म-उल-किताब

सौ ज़बां है एक ख़ामोशी तेरी

सैंक्ड़ों दफ़्तर है तेरा एक बाब

The series on non-muslim poets is just as rich as that on muslim poets. Similarly, under “n’aat-e masiihi” are odes to Christ composed in urdu, by Christians of different language backgrounds. This nazm of pyare laal shaakir meeraThi (1880-1956), of hindu heritage, hindi mother tongue is written in urdu and is in praise of “The Word of Truth”. But nowhere is it apparent what word it applies to … it could have been written for the geeta or the qur’aan. In fact it was written in praise of injeel/the Bible.

chashma3-e shiriN4 hai tu zer5-e sahaab6

“zer-e sahaab” while literally in English is “under a cloud”, it means “under the protection of divine blessing”. Thus, for thirsty travelers on the path of Truth, you are like a sweet spring fed by a divine cloud.

You are the comfort of the wound of the heart, the cure for a hundred ills.

hai riyaaz2-e quds3 ka goya4 gulaab

The world is redolent with your fragrance as if you are the rose of the garden of paradise.
