اِنسان غرق رہتا ہے جب تک شراب میں

مجنوں کے وقت میں نہ تھی شائد یہ دستیاب

لکھے ہوے ہیں عشق کے گُر جس کتاب میں

بیکار ہیں مباحثے سب کفر و دین کے

اُلجھائیں بات اور سوال و جواب میں

پیری میں ختم ہوتی ہے پروازؔ جُستجو

آتے ہیں اِنقلاب ہمیشہ شباب میں

इतना तो हो हि सकता था ख़त के जवाब में

एक बार भेज देता ख़ुदा उन को ख़्वाब में

रखिये हमेशा दूर दिल इज़्तेराब से

देखा है रुक भी जाते हैं दिल इज़्तेराब में

करते नहीं हैं कुछ भी बजुज़ आर्ज़ू के हम

लिक्खेंगे क्या फ़रिश्ते हमारे हिसाब में

होता नहीं है उस से कोई काम काम का

इन्सान ग़र्क़ रहता है जब तक शराब में

मजनूं के वक़्त में न थी शा’एद ये दस्तियाब

लिक्खे हुए हैं इश्क़ के गुर जिस किताब में

बेकार हैं मुबाहसे सब कुफ़्र ओ दीन के

उल्झाएं बात और सवाल ओ जवाब में

पीरी में ख़त्म होती है परवाज़ जुस्तजू

आते है इन्क़ेलाब हमेशा शबाब में

He settled in jalandhar district after 1947. shaagird of rajendra nath rahbar. I could not figure out what he did for a living. He lived in a small village, noor mahal. My guess is that he had lands and engaged in agriculture. This Ghazal, in the style of Ghalib’s, ‘saaqi ne kuchh mila na diya ho sharaab meN’ is linked to ‘Ghalib naqsh-e qadam’.

At least this much could have been arranged in answer to my letters (to the beloved, asking her to meet me), god could have sent her in my dreams.

dekha hai ruk bhi jaate haiN dil izteraab meN

Always keep your heart as far away as possible from restlessness/eagerness of desire. It has been known that hearts stop beating in excess of eagerness.

likkheNge kya farishte3 hamaare hisaab4 meN

It is thought that each person has two angels assigned to them. They sit on each shoulder and note down every good and bad deed. On the day of judgement an accounting of the good and bad and their balance is presented. Thus, we don’t do anything other than longing/desire for something (union for the beloved). What can angels write (as our deeds) in our account.

insaan Gharq3 rahta hai jab tak sharaab meN

This is an interesting reversal of convention. In poetic tradition, wine is admired as a good thing, but here … he cannot accomplish any task that is useful as long as man remains drowned in (obsessed with) wine.

majnuN ke vaqt meN na thi shaa’ed1 ye dastiyaab2
likkhe hue haiN ishq ke gur3 jis kitaab meN

In poetic tradition majnuN is the exemplar of a lover who never succeeds in finding his beloved laila. Perhaps during the time of majnuN it was not available, the book in which is written are ways/skills of success in love.
