کانٹوں سے میں نے پیار کیا ہے کبھی کبھی

پھولوں کو شرمسار کیا ہے کبھی کبھی

یا شکوہ سنجِ جورِ خزاں ہی رہے ہیں ہم

یا ماتمِ بہار کیا ہے کبھی کبھی

اِتنا اثر تو ہے کہ مرے اضطراب نے

اُن کو بھی بے قرار کیا ہے کبھی کبھی

اللہ ری بے خودی کہ ترے پاس بیٹھ کر

تیرا ہی اِنتظار کیا ہے کبھی کبھی

اعجازِ شوق ہے کہ میرے ذوقِ دید نے

جلوؤں کو شرمسار کیا ہے کبھی کبھی

اے شادؔ میں نے اپنے غمِ جاں گداز کو

شعروں میں آشکار کیا ہے کبھی کبھی

कांटौं से मैं ने प्यार किया है कभी कभी

फूलौं को शर्मसार किया है कभी कभी

या शिक्वा-संज-ए जौर-ए ख़िज़ां हि रहे हैं हम

या मातम-ए बहार किया है कभी कभी

इतना असर तो है के मेरे इज़्तेराब ने

उन को भी बेक़रार किया है कभी कभी

अल्लाह रि बेख़ुदी के तेरे पास बैठ कर

तेरा हि इंतेज़ार किया है अभी अभी

ए’जाज़-ए शौक़ है के मेरे ज़ौक़-ए दीद ने

जल्वौं को शर्मसार किया है कभी कभी

अए शाद मैं ने अपने ग़म-ए जां-गुदाज़ को

शे’रौं में आश्कार किया है कभी कभी

phooloN ko sharmsaar1 kiya hai kabhi kabhi   
1.shamed, disappoint
Sometimes I have loved thorns. I have put flowers to shame. Flowers represent joy and happiness, thorns represent pain and sorrow. Thus the poet has shown preference for pain and sorrow over joy and pleasure, putting the latter to shame. The preference for ‘pain’ could well be an expression of fellow-feeling with the deprived masses over the priveleged.

ya shikva-sanj1-e jaur-e-KhizaaN2 hi rahe haiN hum
yaa maatam3-e bahaar4 kiya hai kabhi kabhi

I speak out/protest against the oppression of deprivation (dry season stands for deprivation). At other times, I mourn the arrival of spring. Thus, he feels rebellious at all times – until justice is established.

itna asar1 to hai keh mere izteraab2 ne
un ko bhi beqaraar3 kiya hai kabhi kabhi

My anguish has had at least this much effect. It has made the beloved (or the capitalists) restless (feel guilty) sometimes.

allaah ri beKhudi1 keh tere paas baiTh kar
tera hi intezaar2 kiya hai abhi abhi

By god, look at my senseless oblivion – sitting next to you (the beloved), I have been waiting for your arrival at times.
