اِک  کرن  آج  سمٹی  اِس  انداز  سے،  چاند  سورج  کے  جلوؤں  کو  شرما  گئی

ساری  دھرتی  پہ  کہرام  سا  مچ  گیا،  آج  اِک  قہر  سا  قہر  نازل  ہوا

زلزلہ  آگیا،  آسماں  پھٹ  پڑا،  یا  زمیں  اِک  ستارے  سے  ٹکرا  گئی

مرحلے  پُر  خطر  پھر  بھی  گرمِ  سفر،  ہر  قدم  تیز  تر  مسکراتی  نظر

اپنی  منزل  کا  رنگیں  تصوّر  لئے  اِک  مسافر  کو  رستے  میں  نیند  آ  گئی

باغباں  اُٹھ  گیا  لیکن  اُس  کا  لہو،  خاک  میں  مل  گیا  بن  کے  جوشِ  نمو

آنکھ  اُٹھا  کر  تو  دیکھو  چمن  دوستو،  ہر  طرف  رنگ  پرور  بہار  آ  گئی

ایک  جادو  تھا  یا  اُس  کی  آواز  تھی،  حاصلِ  سوز  تھی،  حاملِ  ساز  تھی

اُس  کی  آواز  جب  بھی  پڑی  کان  میں،  ہم  تغافل  پسندوں  کو  چونکا  گئی

امن  کا  جنگ  بازوں  کو  قائل  کیا،  عافیت  کی  طرف  اُن  کو  مائل  کیا

اُس  کی  تعلیم  ہی  کا  نتیجہ  ہے  یہ،  آج  دُنیا  کہاں  سے  کہاں  آ  گئی

جب  تعصُّب  سے  تاریک  تھی  کُل  فضا،  اُس  کی  شمع  محبّت  کی  دلکش  ضیا

جھلملاتی  ہوئی،  جگمگاتی  ہوئی،  سُو  بہ  سُو  چادرِ  نور  پھیلا  گئی

حلقۂ  غم  کی  وسعت  تو  دیکھو  ذرا،  ساری  دُنیا  بنی  آج  ماتم  سرا

ایک  دیر  و  حرم  ہی  نہیں  رو  رہے،  آج  چشمِ  کلیسا  بھی  پتھرا  گئی

سامنے  اُس  کا  ایثار  و  کردار  ہے،  قوم  بیدار  ہے،  راہ  ہموار  ہے

ہم  نے  اپنائی  ہے  اُس  کی  سچّی  لگن،  چند  گام  اور  منزل  قریب  آ  گئی

दोस्तो! ये न कहना ख़ुदा के लिये, अपने महबूब नेता को मौत आ गई

एक किरन आज सिम्टी इस अंदाज़ से, चांद सूरज के जल्वौं को शरमा गई

सारी धर्ती पे कोहराम सा मच गया, आज एक क़हर सा क़हर नाज़िल हुआ

ज़ल्ज़ला आ गया, आस्मां फट पढा, या ज़मीं एक सितारे से टक्रा गई

मरहले पुर-ख़तर, फिर भी गर्म-ए सफ़र, हर क़दम तेज़-तर, मुस्कुराती नज़र

अपनी मंज़िल का रंगीं तसव्वुर लिये, एक मुसाफ़र को रस्ते में नींद आ गई

बाग़्बां उठ तया लैकिन उस का लहू, ख़ाक में मिल गया बन के जोश-ए नुमू

आंख उठा कर तो देखो चमन दोस्तो, हर तरफ़ रंग परवर बहार आ गई

एक जादू था या उस की आवाज़ थी, हासिल-ए सोज़ थी, हामिल-ए साज़ थी

उस की आवाज़ जब भी पढी कान में, हम तग़ाफ़ुल पसंदौं को चौंका गई

अम्न का जंग-बाज़ौं को क़ा’एल किया, आफ़िय्यत की तरफ़ उन को मा’एल किया

उस की तालीम हि का नतीजा है ये, आज दुनिया कहां से कहां आ गई

जब ता’अस्सुब से तारीक थी कुल फ़ज़ा, उस की शम’अ-ए मोहब्बत की दिल्कश ज़िया

झिल्मिलाती हुई, जगमगाती हुई, सू-ब-शू चादर-ए नूर फैला गई

हल्क़ा-ए ग़म कि सूरत तो देखो ज़रा, सारी दुनिया बनी आज मातम सरा

एक दैर ओ हरम हि नहीं रो रहे, आज चश्म-ए कलिसा भी पथ्रा गई

सामने उस का ईसार ओ किर्दार है, क़ौम बेदार है, राह हमवार है

हम ने अपनाई है उस की सच्ची लगन, चंद गाम और मंज़िल क़रीब आ गई

जिस्म उस का बना जुज़्व-ए ख़ाक-ए वतन, रूह उस की बनी जज़्बा-ए कोहकन

आज का हिन्द नहरू की तस्वीर है, कौन कहता है नहरू को मौत आ गई

His father was a scholar of urdu and faarsi and grandfather (tulsidas) was also an urdu shaa’er. Ill-treatment by his stepmother drove him to seclusion and reading. All the books at home including religious texts were in urdu. He read up all of them and learnt to write too. Interest in shaa’eri started from childhood. In college he was class fellow of jagan nath azad and through him became a disciple of tilok chand mahroom. Continued education incluing Public Service Commission exam. Worked for the government of panjab and later haryana, retiring in 1974. At least 10 collections of his shaa’eri including Ghazal, rubaaii and nazm. This is one of several nazm composed as a tribute to nehru, some during his lifetime, others upon his passing.

zalzala aa gaya, aasmaaN phaT paRa, ya zamiN ek sitaare se Takra gaii

Lamentation spread throughout the land as if a calamity had descended, as if the earth shook and the sky burst and tore or the earth collided with a star.

apni manzil7 ka raNgiiN tasavvur8 liye, ek musaafir9 ko raste meN niind aa gaii

The obstacles in his way were full of danger/pitfalls, but he was steadfast on his journey, with each step faster than the one before and a smile on his lips. He was headed to his destination carrying the colourful/beautiful vision of his goal in his mind. But sleep descended on the seeker mid-way throught the journey.

The gardener may be gone, but his blood mingled with the soil and became a passion of renewal. Raise your eyes and look at the garden, my friends. In every direction a colourful spring appears.

us ki aavaaz jab bhi paRi kaan meN, hum taGhaaful-pasandoN6 ko chauNka7 gaii

us ki taaliim7 hi ka nateeja8 hai ye, aaj duniya kahaaN se kahaaN ho gaii

He convinced war-mongers to make peace, got them to agree peaceful existence. It is the result of his teaching that the world has reached this stage of peaceful co-existence.

ek dair3 o haram4 hi nahiN ro rahe, aaj chashm5-e kaliisa6 bhi pathhra7 gaii

Just look at the circle of mourners. The whole world is mourning. It is not just the mosque and temple that are crying, the eyes of the church too have turned to stone.

hum ne apnaaii7 hai us ki sachchi lagan8, chand9 gaam10 aur manzil11 qariib12 aa gaii

‘farhaad-kohkan’ is legendary for his single-minded passion of achieving his goal, cutting a channel throught he mountain to win the hand of shirin. His body has become a part of the soil of the homeland. His spirit reflects the passion of farhaad. Today’s India is a reflection of nehru. Who says nehru is dead (what naïve optimism!!!!!).
