Was nominated to Indian Civil Service but chose to participate in the freedom movement. After independence he chose an academic career, teaching English at Allahabad University. har diida¹-e mushtaaq² meN shabnam³ ki jhalak⁴ hai
aaNkhoN meN jo pinhaaN⁵ hai vo Gham baaNT raha huN     1.eye 2.yearning 3.dew 4.flash, momentary expression 5.hidden
Everyone yearns for something. Usually, they don’t get it. Their eyes are tearful, but only momentarily, because they hide their pain. Thus, in every yearning eye there is a flash of a tear drop. I am giving away the pain that is hidden in those eyes.

Khallaaq¹-e tamaddun² hai yahi niisti³-e ishq
hasti⁴ ko maiN paiGhaam⁵-e iram⁶ baaNT raha huN     1.creator 2.culture, civilization 3.non-existence, non-being 4.existence, being 5.message 6.heaven
Cultures and civilizations are human created. There may be more than one ‘creator’. He is addressing the creators of culture … what you have created is a non-existence i.e., a denial of universal love. To counter this, I am giving away the message of heaven, of universal love.

ash’aar haiN ya ganj¹-e giraaN-maaya²-e fitrat³

ye talKh-navaaii¹ meri zaamin² hai baqa³ ki

The poet’s frank words are a guarantee of their survival into the future. He is giving away that cruelty (frank words) which the soul of kindness/goodness.

I bring good news about a new age/new order/new system to the world. Or, (you might say) I am offering a new fate to the people.
