پہلے تم سجدہ گزارِ درِ جاناں ہونا
بعد کو مستحقِ رحمتِ یزداں ہونا
۲
آدمی کے لیے آساں ہیں مسلماں ہونا
گرچہ مشکل ہے بہت صاحبِ ایماں ہونا
۳
خدمتِ خلق میں ہے جذبۂ ایماں ہونا
ہے یہی رسمِ وفا اور یہی اِنساں ہونا

مجھ کو رسوا تو کیا تم نے بھری محفل میں
دل سے پوچھو، کہ اُسی دن سے پریشاں ہو نا

وہ چلے جائیں جو اس گھر سے جھٹک کر دامن
دل کی ویرانی سے کمتر ہے بیاباں ہونا

ہم جو پڑھتے ہیں وظیفہ تیرے دم کا جانم
ہے ترے ذکر میں سر بستہ ثنا خواں ہونا

دل میں جب اس کو بسایا ہے تو پھر کیا غم ہے
چاک داماں ہو کہ ہو چاک گریباں ہونا

صرف اٹھلا کے چلے جانا نہیں ہے کافی
دل میں در آنا کبھی آ کے مری جاں ہونا

تم پہ اے دوست ہے اردو کا تحفظ لازم

मुझ को रुसवा तो किया तुमने भरी महफ़िल में
दिल से पूछो, के उसी दिन से परेशां होना

वो चले जा’एं जो इस घर से झटक कर दामन
दिल की वीरानी से कमतर है बियाबां होना

हम जो पढ़ते हैं वज़ीफ़ा तेरे दम का जानम
है तेरे ज़िक्र में सरबस्ता सना-ख़्वां होना

दिल में जब उस को बसाया है तो फिर क्या ग़म है
चाक दामाँ हो, के हो चाक गरेबां होना
८
सिर्फ़ इठला के चले जाना नहीं है काफ़ी
दिल में दर आना कभी आ के मेरी जां होना

तुम पे अए दोस्त है उर्दू का तहफ़्फ़ुज़ लाज़िम

In orthodox convention one is not supposed to prostrate before anyone except god. But the poet says, go ahead and first offer prostrations at the door of the beloved. Later, you can beg forgiveness and become deserving of the kindness/forgiveness of god. Alternatively, he might be saying – by first performing sajda at the door of the beloved, later you will become deserving of the benevolence of god. Thus, to get god’s forgiveness it is necessary to bow at the door of the beloved.

The poet is making a distinction between being a muslim as in superficially/mechanically following rituals versus becoming a master of faith as in following the spirit of the faith. Thus, it is easy to be ritualistically muslim, but very difficult to be a master of the faith.

Khidmat1-e Khalq2 meN hai jazba3-e iimaaN4 hona
hai yahi rasm5-e vafa6 aur yahi insaaN hona 1.service 2.creation, humanity 3.feelings 4.faith 5.tradition 6.fidelity, truthfulness
The true feeling of faith is in the service of humanity. This is the only tradition of being true (to faith) and the only way to become human.

mujh ko rusva1 to kya tum ne bhari mahfil2 meN
dil se poochho, keh usi din se pareshaaN3 hona 1.embarrassed 2.gathering 3.worried
The beloved has insulted the poet/lover and embarrassed him in front of everyone in her gathering. But he implies that she truly loves him and if she looked into her own heart, she will see that she has been worried since that day.

voh chale’ jaa’eN jo is ghar se jhaTak1 kar daaman2
dil ki veeraani3 se kamtar4 hai biyaabaaN5 hona 1.shake off 2.hem of the garment 3.desolation 4.less than 5.wilderness, desert
Here ‘ghar’ implies heart. ‘daaman jhaTakna’ is an expression that means be finished with, break off association with, give everything away – depending on the context. In this context, it means break off all association. Thus, if the beloved were to leave his house/heart, breaking off all association then even the desolation of the wilderness will be less than that of his heart.

When we/I constantly chant your name O beloved, in the narrative is contained the intent to sing your praises. Of course, this can also apply to the divine beloved.

chaak2 daamaaN3 ho keh ho chaak2 garebaaN4 hona 1.give a home to 2.torn 3.hem of the garment 4.collar
The lover, in the madness of his passion, tears his clothes – be it the hem or the collar, and wanders the desolate desert in search of the beloved. Thus, now that I have given my heart as a home to you, what difference does it make if the hem is torn or the collar.

It is not enough for you to walk away coquettishly, showing indifference towards me. Some time you have to openly and forcefully enter through the door of my heart and become my life and soul.
