پیش و پس میں نہ تھا ۔ سرور بارہ بنکوی

یہی نہیں کہ مرا دل ہی میرے بس میں نہ تھا
جو توُ ملا تو میں خود اپنی دسترس میں نہ تھا

بہ نامِ عہدِ رفاقت بھی ہم قدم نہ ہوا
یہ حوصلہ مرے معصوم ہم نفس میں نہ تھا

عجیب سحر کا عالم تھا اُس کی قربت میں
وہ میرے پاس تھا اور میری دسترس میں نہ تھا

نہ جانے قافلۂ اہلِ دل پہ کیا گزری
یہ اضطراب کبھی نالۂ جرس میں نہ تھا

خبر تو ہوگی تجھے تیرے جاں نثاروں میں
کوئی تو تھا سرِ مقتل جو پیش و پس میں نہ تھا

سرورؔ اپنے چمن کی فضا ہے کیا کہئے
سکوت کا تو وہ عالم ہے جو قفس میں نہ تھا

जो तू मिला तो मैं ख़ुद अपनी दस्तरस में न था

ब-नाम-ए-अहद-ए-रिफ़ाक़त भी हम-क़दम न हुआ
ये हौसला मेरे मासूम हम-नफ़स में न था

अजीब सेहर का आलम था उस की क़ुर्बत में
वो मेरे पास था और मेरी दस्तरस में न था

न जाने क़ाफ़िला-ए-अहल-ए-दिल पे क्या गुज़री
ये इज़्तेराब कभी नाला-ए-जरस में न था
५
ख़बर तो होगी तुझे तेरे जाँ-निसारों में
कोई तो था सर-ए-मक़्तल जो पेश-ओ-पस में न था
६
सुरूर अपने चमन की फ़िज़ा है क्या कहिए
सुकूत का तो वो आलम है जो क़फ़स में न था

It was not just that I lost control of my heart when I found you, I aso was not sure if I was within my own reach/control. The poet/lover/revolutionary surrenders body and soul to the beloved or to the cause.

ba-naam1-e ahd2-e rifaaqat3 bhi hum-qadam4 na hua
ye hausla5 mere maasoom6 hum-nafas7 meN na tha 1.in the name of, for the sake of 2.promise 3.friendship 4.walking together, on the same path (of socialism) 5.courage, determination 6.innocent, simple 7.literally-same breath, friend
His friends/comrades had promised that they would stay with him on the path, but they did not have the determination to do so, even in the name of/for the sake of promise of friendship.

ajeeb1 sahr2 ka aalam3 tha us ki qurbat4 meN
vo mere paas tha aur meri dastras5 meN na tha 1.strange, unusual 2.magic, enchantment 3.condition 4.closeness, familiarity, love 5.within reach
The poet/lover/revolutionary felt an exhilarating sense of enchantment when he was he was close to the beloved. She was near, yet he could not quite reach her. Of course, this could be conventional romantic beloved or a socialist system.

na jaane qaafila1-e ahl-e-dil2 pe kya guzri3
ye izteraab4 kabhi naala5-e jaras6 meN na tha 1.caravan, traveling party 2.people of heart, lovers, comrades 3.happened, transpired 4.restlessness 5.wailing 6.departure
The picture is of the travel party of comrades. The bell announcing their departure of the onward journey has sounded but it sounds strangely different, pathos filled, setting the poet/revolutionary to wonder what happened. Perhaps a new edict from the governing authorities.

Khabar1 to hogi tujhe tere jaaN-nisarauN2 meN
koi to tha sar-e maqtal3 jo pesh-o-pas4 meN na tha 1.knowledge, awareness 2.lovers ready to give their lives for the beloved 3.execution platform 4.hesitation
Surely you must be aware that among your lovers there was at least one at the hangman’s ready to lay down his life for you. The beloved is social justice and the ready lover is the poet.

suroor apne chaman ki faza1 hai kya kahiye
sukoot2 ka to vo aalam3 hai jo qafas4 meN na tha 1.atmosphere, conditions 2.calm, quiet 3.condition 4.cage
The country is the chaman/garden and song birds are poets/revolutionaries. In the garden there is calm, no one is singing songs of protest. It is even more quiet than it used to be in the cage.
