Click here for background and on any passage for word meanings and explanatory discussion. renu verma (1974-living), jodhpur. Her urdu composition is exquisite and yet in her book “kaifiyyat”, published in 2018, in devanagiri, she states that she does not know how to read and write urdu. By my rough count, her book already has more than 75 Ghazal/nazm. All I can say is, ‘zor-e qalam aur ziyaada’. This Ghazal is in the zamin of Ghalib’s ‘ibn-e mariam hua kare koii’.
1
phool se hi pataa1 kare koii
kaise Khushbu likha kare koii
1.ask about, inquire
Since she is talking about ‘Khushbu likhna i.e. writing fragrance’, it is reasonable to deduce that her poetry is fragrance that she wants to create and spread. The flower knows the art of creating and spreading fragrance. She wants to ask it how and learn from it.

2
le gayii vo uRa ke baadal ko
aise Gham ko hava kare koii
Here the “vo” refers to the wind/breeze. Just like the wind blows away clouds, she wants to learn (or suggests that all of us learn) how to blow away sorrow.

3

jharna ban kar giraa kare koii
A falling person – ‘girta insaan’, is someone who is losing dignity, respect or general well-being. But even falling water sings a song. Just like that listen to the song of a falling person i.e. recognize goodness in him. Or, is this a wish that someone descend into her life like a song!

4
shab andheri hai Dar sa lagta hai
jugnu ban kar jiya kare koii
The night is dark and she is fearful. She wants to live like a glow-worm, lighting up the darkness, spreading cheer, spreading the light of knowledge.

5
yaad ehsaas1 ban kar aati hai
qarz2 us ka adaa3 kare koii
1.feelings, emotions 2.debt 3.pay back
Memories arrive in the shape of sentiments/emotions. These are to be valued. They are a gift that memories give to us. We owe them a debt. We should pay back this debt, perhaps by nurturing memories.

6
naam hoNToN pe aaNkh meN soorat
tan badan meN Dhalaa kare koii
She has the name of that special person on her lips, his image in her mind and wishes that he would descend into her the very essence of her being, her soul.

7
chaand ko jyuuN1 chakor2 takta hai
renu ko bhi takaa kare koii
1.like, similar to 2.legendary bird in love with the full moon, stares at it all night long
Just like the chakor stares at the full moon, may that someone special keep looking at the poet.
