اے میرِ کاروانِ وطن! اے شہیدِ قوم!

تیرے لہو سے اپنا چمن لالہ زار ہے

تیرے ہی دم قدم سے بیاباں مہک گئے

اپنے گُلوں میں جو بھی ہے تیری بہار ہے

صدق و صفا کو تجھ سے ملی چشمِ معتبر

امن و اماں کا دہر میں تجھ سے وقار ہے

وہ سادگی کہ لاکھ ادایئں عرق عرق

وہ دلبری کہ حسن جہاں شرمسار ہے

صدیوں کی پائمالی کا خاموش درد و غم

عزمِ جواں سے تیرے خروشِ بہار ہے

کل تھا جو سامراج کا قصرِ بلند بام

دھندلا سا آج ایک نشانِ مزار ہے

تو نے ہمارے رندوں کے شوقِ فضول کو

اپنے نفس سے جراؑتِ رندانہ کر دیا

دیر و حرم کے جلوے فراموش ہو گئے

یوں اہتمامِ زینتِ میخانہ کر دیا

تھی تجھ سے پہلے اپنی سیاست گداگری

تو نے دعا کو ضربِ کلیمانہ کر دیا

پُر اپنی مے سے شیشہ و پیمانہ کر دیا

अए मीर-ए कारवान-ए वतन! अए शहीद-ए क़ौम!

तेरे लहू से अपना चमन लाला-ज़ार है

तेरे हि दम-क़दम से बियाबां महक गए

अपने गुलौं में जो भी है तेरी बहार है

सिद्क़ ओ सफ़ा को तुझ से मिली चश्म-ए मो’तबर

अम्न ओ अमां का दहर में तुझ से वक़ार है

वो सादगी के लाख अदाएं अरक़ अरक़

वो दिल्बरी के हुस्न-ए जहां शर्मसार है

सदियौं कि पाए’माली का ख़ामोश दर्द ओ ग़म

अज़्म-ए जवां से तेरे ख़रोश-ए बहार है

कल था जो साम्राज का क़स्र-ए बलंद-बाम

धुंद्ला सा आज एक निशान-ए मज़ार है

तू ने हमारे रिंदौं के शौक़-ए फ़ुज़ूल को

अपने नफ़स से जुर’अत-ए रिंदाना कर दिया

दैर ओ हरम के जल्वे फ़रामोश हो गये

यूं एहतमाम-ए ज़ीनत-ए मयख़ाना कर दिया

थी तुझ से पहले अपनी सियासत गदागरी

तू ने दुआ को ज़र्ब-ए कलीमाना कर दिया

O leader of the caravan of the homeland! You were martyred by the nation. It is your blood that makes red flowers bloom in our garden.

It is because of your (moral) power and your effort that the wilderness is fragrant. Whatever bloom there is in our roses, it is because of you.

Truth and virtue (in politics) received a look of credibility because of you. The world respects peace and protection (of the downtrodden) because of what you did.

vo dilbari4 keh husn-e-jahaaN5 sharmsaar6 hai

Your simplicity was such, before which royal robes were ashamed. You reached out to everyone, putting to shame the ways in which selfishness worked in the world.

dhundla4 sa aaj ek nishaan-e-mazaar5 hai

That which only yesterday was the grand palace of the kingdom, today looks like a faded image of a mausoleum.

tu ne hamaare rindoN1 ke shauq-e fuzool2 ko
apne nafas3 se jur’at4-e rindaana kar diya

In urdu poetic convention the maikada=tavern is symbolic of a gathering place of free thinkers, rebels, free of narrow ritualistic thought etc and the rind=revelers, patrons of the maikada are rebels. Thus, before gandhi these “rind” were engaged in activities that did not have much effect. With his breath/words he gave them the courage of rebellion.

Here ‘maiKhaana=tavern’ is liberal space and is also symbolic of the syncretic culture of hindustan. Thus, the images of temple and mosque faded (such optimism, shattered by present day politics), that is the way in which you arranged the beautification of the tavern/homeland.

‘kaleem’ is another name of Moses. He and his staff/stick is associated with working miracles. Thus, “zarb-e kaleemaana” is a miraculous strike/blow. Before you, our politics (demand for freedom) was characterized by appealing and begging. You changed the appeal to a miraculous blow.

There is such ecstacy in the memory of the piir-e muGhaan that we too let out a cry of trance. This nazm was composed in 1951 and shows the affection with which gandhi was regarded long after he was gone.
