qabr-Grave – anis-Shakespeare

Grave – Shakespeare

1
In Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure”, the protagonist, Claudio has been sentenced to death.  His sister, visiting him in prison, tries to comfort him but Claudio is defiant using metaphors that sound very “Oriental”.

If I must die.
I will encounter darkness as a bride, and hug it in my arms

2
In, “Titus Andronicus”, Titus is burying his sons and has this to say about their final resting place …

Here lurks no treason, here no envy swells,
Here grow no damned grudges; here no storms
No noise but silence and eternal sleep

3
In the famous soliloquy – “to be or not to be” Hamlet ponders how all heartaches will be gone if he should die …

To die – to – sleep –
No more, and, by a sleep to say weend
The heart ache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to; it is a consummation
Devoutly to be wished

4
And yet again from the same soliloquy of Hamlet, we get this universal observation about no return from the hereafter …

But that the dread of something after death
The undiscovered country from whose bourn
No traveller returns.

5
Pericles, the Prince of Tyre, acutely aware of his mortality says …

For death remembered should be like a mirror
Who tells us life is but breath, to trust it error
