قید ہے قید کی میعاد نہیں

جور ہے جور کی فریاد نہیں داد نہیں

رات ہے رات کی خاموشی ہے تنہائی ہے

دور مجلس کی فصیلوں سے بہت دور کہیں

سینہ شہر کی گہرائی سے گھنٹوں کی صدا آتی ہے

چونک جاتا ہے دماغ

 

جھلملا جاتی ہے انفاس کی لوٰ

جاگ اُٹھتی ہے  مری شمع شبستانِ خیال

زندگانی کی اک اک بات کی یاد آتی ہے

شاہراہوں میں گلی کوچوں میں اِنسانوں کی بھیڑ

اُنکے مصروف قدم

اُنکے ماتھے پہ تردّد کے نقوش

اُنکی آنکھوں میں غمِ دوش اور اندیشہ فردا کا خیال

 

سیکڑوں لاکھوں قدم

سیکڑوں لاکھوں عوام

سیکڑوں لاکھوں دھڑکتے ہوے اِنسانوں کے دِل

جورِ شاہی سے غمیں، جبرِ سیاست سے نڈھال

جانے کس موڑ پہ یہ دھن سے دھماکا ہو جائیں

سالہا سال کی افسردہ و مجبور جوانی کی اُمنگ

طوق و زنجیر سے لپٹی ہوئی سو جاتی ہے

 

کروٹیں لینے میں زنجیر کی جھنکار کا شور

خواب میں زیست کی شورش کا پتہ دیتا ہے

مجھے غم ہے کہ میرا گنج گراں مایہ عمر

نذرِ زنداں ہوا

نذرِ آزادیِ زندانِ وطن کیوں نہ ہوا

क़ैद है क़ैद कि मे’आद नहीं

जोर है जोर की फ़र्याद नहीं, दाद नहीं

रात है रात की ख़ामोशी है तन्हाई है

दूर मजलिस की फ़सीलों से बहुत दूर कहीं

सीना ए शह्‌र की गहराई से घंटों की सदा आती है

चौंक जाता है दिमाग़

 

झिलमिला जाती है अनफ़ास की लौ

जाग उठति है मेरी शमा’ ए शबिस्तान ए ख़्याल

ज़ींदगानी की एक एक बात की याद आती है

शाहराहों में गली कूचों में इंसानों की भीड़

उनके मसरूफ़ क़दम

उनके माथे पे तरद्दुद के नुक़ूश

उन की आँखों मे ग़म ए दोष ओ अंदेशा ए फ़र्दा का ख़्याल

 

सैकड़ों लाखों क़दम

सैकड़ों लाखों अवाम

सैकड़ों लाखों धड़कते हुए इंसानों के दिल

जोर ए शाही से ग़मीं, जब्र ए सियासत से निढ़ाल

जाने किस मोड़ पे ये धन से धमाका हो जाएँ

साल्हा साल की अफ़सुर्दा ओ मजबूर जवानी की उमंग

तौक़ ओ ज़ंजीर से लपटि हुई सो जाती है

 

करवटें लेने में ज़ंजीर की झंकार का शोर

ख़्वाब में ज़ीस्त की शोरीश का पता देता है

मुझे ग़म है के मेरा गंज ए गिरां माया उमर

नज़्र ए ज़िन्दान हुआ

नज़्र ए आज़ादी ए ज़िन्दान ए वतन क्यूं ना हुआ

He was imprisoned in Hyderbad Central Jail. Completely coincidentally faiz was also imprisoned in Hyderabad Central Jail (except that Hyderabad is in Sindh). Imprisonment, but no duration determined, no end in sight. Oppression, but neither appeal nor compensation. I am left only with the night and my loneliness. Far away beyond the parapets, far, far away a faint tinkling of bells from the heart of the city. The mind receives a jolt.

My breath sparkles as rises out of my mouth. The only night lamp I have is a string of memories as I remember random bits of life. Crowds of people on the highways and streets, busy, walking rapidly, their brows wrinkled with worry, regretful of yesterday, fearful of tomorrow

Millions and millions of feet. Millions and millions of people. Millions and millions of throbbing hearts, saddened at the cruelty of kings, exhausted by the oppression of politics. I wonder when it will burst with a bang. Wilted and helpless aspirations of youth goes to sleep tied up in fetters and chains.

I am sad that the essence/value of my life is wasted in prison, not sacrificed in releasing the homeland from the prison of colonization.
