آپ کی یاد آ تی رہی رات بھر

چشمِ نم مسکراتی رہی رات بھر

 

رات بھر  درد کی شمع  جلتی  رہی

غم کی لوٰ تھرتھراتی رہی رات بھر

 

بانسری  کی سر یلی سہانی صدا

یاد بن بن کے آ تی رہی رات بھر

 

یاد کے چاند دل میں اُترتے رہے

چا ندنی جگمگاتی رہی  رات  بھر

 

کوئی  دیوانہ گلیوں میں پھرتا رہا

کوئی آواز آ تی رہی  رات بھر

 

रात भर – मख़दूम मोहिउद्दीन

 

आपकी याद आती रही रात भर

चश्म ए नम मुस्कुराती रही रात भर

 

रात भर दर्द की शम’अ जलती रही

ग़म की लौ थरथराती रही रात भर

 

बांसुरी की सुरीली सुहानी सदा

याद बन बन के आती रही रात भर

 

याद के चाँद दिल में उतरते रहे

चांदनी जगमगाती रही रात भर

 

कोई दीवाना गलियों में फिरता रहा

कोई आवाज़ आती रही रात भर

There is great pleasure in comparing by repeated back and forth reading this ghazal and Faiz’s composition in the style of Makhdoom’s done as a tribute to his friend. Makhdoom might well be talking about his beloved, but Faiz has a double meaning, talking about his friend and also about the beloved.

“chashm e nam muskuraana” – teary eye smiling is a beautiful juxtaposition of pain and pleasure, a long established tradition in Urdu poetry where many times pain is to be treasured. Your memories emerged all night long. Tearful eyes recalling loving moments, smiled all night long.

raat bhar dard ki sham’a jalti rahi
Gham ki lau thartharati rahi raat bhar
All night long the lamp of pain remained lit. The flame of sorrow flickered all night long. “dard ki sham’a jalti rahi raat bhar” … there is an implied statement that the lamp was intentionally kept going all night long, that pain was treasured and sustained, that the pain of remembering the beloved is nurtured. Note the parallelism that Faiz uses with “sham’a Gham”.

bansuri ki sureli sohaani sada
yaad ban ban ke aati rahi raat bhar
Beautiful, soothing tunes of the flute floated in, like pleasant memories all night long.

yaad ke chaand dil meN utarte rahe
chaandni jagmagati rahi raat bhar
Beautiful memories kept flashing across the mind. The moonlight (of memories) remained bright all night long.

koi deevana galiyoN meN phirta raha
koi aavaz aati rahi raat bhar
Some mad lover wandered through the streets all night long. His moans echoed all night long. Compare this Faiz’s she’r. In Makhdoom’s Ghazal the picture is one of a mad/passionate wanderer ala Majnun. Faiz bemoans the absence of this wanderer to the point that even the door knocker is calling for him.
