برباد تمنا پہ عتاب اور زیادہ
ہاں میری محبت کا جواب اور زیادہ

He received his BA from aligaRh after interruptions in earlier schooling. He developed close relationships with progressives and was a major force in the Progressive Writers’ Association. He lived in aligaRh, dehli and lucknow working for radio stations, editing magazines on and off but with no steady income. He met with a rather tragic end at the young age of 44. This is a firebrand, devil may care declaration of love with no fear of consequences. This could be an declaration of romantic love, of sufiyaana love or love of social justice with great daring.

urdu poetic tradition has it that the beloved is always displeased with the lover. The poet/lover describes himself as the down in the dumps because of his of longing (for the beloved). In spite of his condition, he invites her to show even more displeasure. Conventionally, the lover treasures this displeasure. It is a badge of honour for him.

People who can discern see that the condition of the poet/lover is really bad. But he is defiant and asks them not to pity him just yet. He is going to get worse.

milne haiN abhi mujh ko Khitaab3 aur zyaada 1.aimless wanderer 2.limited to 3.titles
majnuN of laila-majnuN is the symbol of intense love, lover gone mad who wanders the desert looking for the beloved. The poet/lover has acquired those titles because of his condition but he thinks that is not the limit. He is going to continue getting worse and will acquire even more titles.

dekhuNga abhi ishq ke Khwaab aur zyaada Many more storms will rise from his bosom. He will keep dreaming about his love.

dhaRkega dil-e Khaana-Kharaab4 aur zyaada 1.blood 2.eye 3.wet, tearful 4.ruined house, ruined self
Crying tears of blood is a sign of extreme distress. The poet/lover is feeling this distress either because of unrequited love or because of the conditions of injustice/exploitation. Even more blood will drip from these tearful eyes. This ruined heart will throb in pain even more.

The beloved (or the powerful) will be even more perplexed at my statements. She (they) will disavow/move away from me even more.

The saaqi has been generous. The poet/lover is asking for even more generosity and yet more servings of wine (of love or of resistance) so that inebriated (with love) he may write/sing yet another song.
