سُرور  آنکھ  میں  نظروں  میں  زندگی  لے  کر

خودی  کے  ہوش  اُڑانے  بصد  نیاز  آیا

نئے  پیالوں  میں  صہبائے  بے  خودی  لے  کر

فضائے  دہر  میں  گاتا  پھرا  وہ  پریت  کے  گیت

نشاط  خیز  و  سکوں  ریز  بانسری  لے  کر

جہانِ  قلب  سراپا  گداز  بن  ہی  گیا

ہر  ایک  ذرّہ  محبت  کا  ساز  بن  ہی  گیا

جمال  و  حسن  کے  کافر  نکھار  سے  کھیلا

ریاضِ  عشق  کی  رنگیں  بہار  سے  کھیلا

پیمبروں  کی  کبھی  رسم  کی  اَدا  اُس  نے

گوالا  بن  کے  کبھی  سبزہ  زار  سے  کھیلا

بہا  دیے  کبھی  ٹھوکر  سے  پریم  کے  چشمے

کبھی  جمن  کبھی  گنگا  کی  دھار  سے  کھیلا

ہنسی  ہنسی  میں  وہ  دکھ  درد  جھیلتا  ہی  رہا

کرشمہ  باز  زمانے  سے  کھیلتا  ہی  رہا

کیا  زمانے  کو  معمور  اپنے  نغموں  سے

سکھائے  عشق  کے  دستور  اپنے  نغموں  سے

صداقت  اور  محبت  کی  اُس  نے  دی  تعلیم

اندھیریوں  میں  بھرا  نور  اپنے  نغموں  سے

لطافتوں  سے  کیا  ارضِ  ہند  کو  لبریز

کثافتوں  کو  کیا  دور  اپنے  نغموں  سے

فلک  کو  یاد  ہیں  اُس  عہدِ  پاک  کی  باتیں

وہ  بانسری  وہ  محبت  کی  سانولی  راتیں

دلوں  میں  رنگِ  محبت  کو  اُستوار  کیا

سوادِ  ہند  کو  گیتا  سے  نغمہ  بار  کیا

جو  راز  کوششِ  نطق  و  زباں  سے  کُھل  نہ  سکا

وہ  راز  اپنی  نگاہوں  سے  آشکار  کیا

اُداسیوں  کو  نئی  زندگی  عطا  کر  دی

ہر  ایک  ذرّے  کو  دل  دے  کے  بیقرار  کیا

جو  مشرب  اُس  کا  نہ  اِس  طرح  عام  ہو  جاتا

جہاں  سے  محو  محبت  کا  نام  ہو  جاتا

हुआ तुलू’ सितारों की दिलकशी ले कर

सुरूर आँख में नज़्रों में ज़िंदगी ले कर

ख़ुदी के होश उढाने ब-सद नियाज़ आया

नए पियालों में सहबा-ए बे-ख़ुदी ले कर

फ़ज़ा-ए दहर में गाता फिरा वो प्रीत के गीत

नशात-ख़ेज़-ओ-सुकूँ-रेज़ बाँसुरी ले कर

जहान-ए क़ल्ब सरापा-गुदाज़ बन ही गया

हर एक ज़र्रा मोहब्बत का साज़ बन ही गया

जमाल-ओ-हुस्न के काफ़िर निखार से खेला

रियाज़-ए इश्क़ की रंगीं बहार से खेला

पयम्बरों की कभी रस्म की अदा उस ने

ग्वाला बन के कभी सब्ज़ा-ज़ार से खेला

बहा दिए कभी ठोकर से प्रेम के चश्मे

कभी जमन कभी गंगा की धार से खेला

हँसी हँसी में वो दुख-दर्द झेलता ही रहा

करिश्मा-बाज़ ज़माने से खेलता ही रहा

किया ज़माने को मा’मूर अपने नग़्मों से

सिखाए इश्क़ के दस्तूर अपने नग़्मों से

सदाक़त और मोहब्बत की उस ने दी ता’लीम

अंधेरियों में भरा नूर अपने नग़्मों से

लताफ़तों से किया अर्ज़-ए हिन्द को लबरेज़

कसाफ़तों को किया दूर अपने नग़्मों से

फ़लक को याद हैं उस अहद-ए पाक की बातें

वो बाँसुरी वो मोहब्बत की साँवली रातें

दिलों में रंग-ए मोहब्बत को उस्तुवार किया

सवाद-ए हिन्द को गीता से नग़्मा-बार किया

जो राज़ कोशिश-ए नुत्क़-ओ-ज़बाँ से खुल न सका

वो राज़ अपनी निगाहों से आश्कार किया

उदासियों को नई ज़िंदगी अता कर दी

हर एक ज़र्रे को दिल दे के बे-क़रार किया

जो मशरब उस का न इस तरह ‘आम हो जाता

जहाँ से महव मोहब्बत का नाम हो जाता

A progressive poet of secular outlook who wrote nazm of socialist themes as well odes to krishn and buddh. He also did a poetic urdu translation of the whole qur’aan. His secular credentials are impeccable. He along with his contemporary hasrat mohani, participated in the freedom struggle and composed a collection of devotional poems to krishn, which was published as a book called ‘krishn geet’.

He played with a fresh (innocent) mischief of glory and beauty. He played in the spring of the colourful garden of love. At times he fulfilled the traditions of a divine messenger; at times of a cowherd playing the meadow. He made rivers of love flow with the touch of his feet. At times he played with the flowing jamuna and at other times with the gaNga.

He filled the world with his songs. He taught the traditions of love through his songs. He gave lessons of love and truthfulness. Here ‘falak’ is used to mean everything under the sky i.e., the world. The world remembers the stories of that pure era, that flute and those evenings of love.

He made the quality of love strong. He rained songs of love on the darkness of hindostan with his giita. The mystery that could not be resolved through words, he revealed through the eyes i.e., by actions/deed that can be seen. He granted a new life to those who were sorrowful. He gave feelings to every grain of sand and made it restless with love.

jahaaN4 se mahv5 mohabbat ka naam ho jaata
