بار بار گائیں گے لیکن، جی نہ بھرے گا، جی نہ بھرے گا

آتی ہے یہاں میری باری اِک مرتبہ، عہد بہ عہد فراقؔ

تقدیرِ زمیں و زماں ہوں میں، بطنِ گیتی سے اُبھرتا ہوں

اے اہلِ ادب آؤ یہ جاگیر سنبھالو

میں مملکتِ لوح و قلم بانٹ رہا ہوں

ختم ہے مجھ پر غزل گوئیِ دورِ حاضر

دینے والے نے وہ اندازِ سخن مجھ کو دیا

سن لو کہ فراقؔ آج یہاں گرمِ نوا ہے

اِس دور میں اِقلیمِ سخن کا وہ شہنشاہ

لفظِ فراقؔ ہے یا کرتا ہے

جگمگ جگمگ کوئی نگینہ

میری گُھٹّی میں پڑی تھی ہو کے حل اُردو زباں

جو بھی میں کہتا گیا حُسنِ بیاں بنتا گیا

آ کہ محفل میں فراقؔ آج نہیں نغمہ سرا

جا کے اُس کو بلا لاؤ کہ کچھ رات کٹے

زمانہ وارداتِ قلب سننے کو ترستا ہے

اِسی سے تو سر آنکھوں پر مرا دیوان لیتے ہیں

کہ یاد میر کے انداز کی دِلا دینا

فراقؔ ہمنوائے میر و غالب اب نئے نغمے

وہ بزمِ زندگی بدلی وہ بزمِ شاعری بدلا

صدقے فراقؔ اعجازِ سخن کے کیسے اُڑا لی یہ آواز

اِن غزلوں کے پردوں میں تو میر کی غزلیں بولیں ہیں

نقش و نگارِ غزل میں جو تم یہ شادابی پاؤ ہو

ہم اشکوں میں کائنات کے نوکِ قلم کو ڈبو لیں ہیں

یہ اُداس اُداس یہ بجھی ہوئی کوئی زندگی ہے فراقؔ کی

مگر آج کشتِ سخنوری ہے اِسی کے دم سے چمن چمن

सुख़नवर ओ सुख़नवरी – रघुपती सहाय फ़िराक़ गोरखपूरी

आने वाली नस्लें तुम पर फ़ख़्र करेंगी हम-असरो

जब भी उन को ध्यान आएगा तुम ने ‘फ़िराक़’ को देखा है

आने वाली नस्लौं को कुछ नग़्मे दे कर उठ जाऊंगा

बार बार गाएंगे लैकिन, जी न भरेगा, जी न भरेगा

आती है यहां मेरी बारी एक मरतबा अहद ब अहद फ़िराक़

तक़्दीर-ए ज़मीं ओ आस्मां हुं मैं, बत्न-ए गेती से उभरता हूं

अए अहल-ए अदब आओ ये जागीर संभालो

मैं मुम्लकत-ए लौह ओ क़लम बांट रहा हू

ख़त्म है मुझ पर ग़ज़ल गोई-ए दौर-ए हाज़र

देने वाले ने वो अंदाज़-ए सुख़न मुझ को दिया

सुन लो के फ़िराक़ आज यहां गर्म नवा है

इस दौर में इक़्लीम-ए सुख़न का वो शहंशाह

लफ़्ज़-ए फ़िराक़ है या करता है

जगमग जगमग कोई नगीना

मेरी गुट्ठी में पढी थी हो के हल उर्दू ज़बां

जो भी मैं कहता गया हुस्न-ए बयां बनता गया

आ, के महफ़िल में फ़िराक़ आज नहीं नग़्मा सरा

जा के उस को बुला लाओ के कुछ रात कटे

ज़माना वारदात-ए क़ल्ब सुन्ने को तरस्ता है

इसी से तो सर-आंखौं पर मेरा दीवान लेते हैं

फ़िराक़ शेर वो पढ़ना असर में डूबे हुए

के याद मीर के अंदाज़ की दिला देना

फ़िराक़, हम नवा-ए मीर ओ ग़ालेब, अब नये नग़्मे

वो बज़्म-ए ज़िन्दगी बद्ली वो बज़्म-ए शाएरी बद्ला

सद्क़े फ़िराक़ एजाज़-ए सुख़न के, कैसे उढा ली ये आवाज़

इन ग़ज़्लौं के पर्दे में तो मीर कि ग़ज़्लें बोलें हैं

नक़्श ओ नीगार-ए ग़ज़ल में जो तुम ये शादाबी पाओ हो

हम अश्कौं में काएनात के नोक-ए क़लम को डुबो लें हैं

ये उदास उदास, ये बुझी हुई, कोई ज़िन्दगी है फ़िराक़ की

मगर आज किश्त-ए सुख़नवरी है इसी के दम से चमन चमन

Was nominated to Indian Civil Service but chose to participate in the freedom movement. After independence he chose an academic career, teaching English at Allahabad University. This is a part of series on “suKhanvar o suKhanvari” on the theme of what various shu’ara say about themselves, their verse, their mission and their place in history. Many other selections are nazm. For firaq I had to collect ash’aar from different Ghazal.

I will bequeath a few songs/Ghazals to the coming generations and leave/die. They will sing again and again, but they they will not be satisfied, they will not be satisfied.

Someone is being called upon to come and help fetch firaq, who is not at this gathering reciting his Ghazal. Who is this someone? Surely, the beloved. Someone is being called upon to go fetch the beloved. Who is that someone? Is this the saaqi who has convened and is the host of the gathering. He does not say so explicitly.

Hiding behind the curtain/mask of these Ghazal, the poet/firaq is writing Ghazal like mir taqi mir. He is happy with it, and pays tribute to the miracle of versification.

hum ashkoN3 meN kaayenaat4 ke nok-e-qalam5 ko Dubo leN haiN

You dip the point of the pen in ink to write. In this case the poet dips it in the tears of the universe i.e. he is writing about the sorrow of the deprived of the world. That is why you see a fresh adornment in his Ghazal.

magar aaj kisht1-e suKhanvari2 hai isi ke dam3 se chaman chaman

firaq had a very sorrowful personal life. His wife left him early on and their son died very young. firaq spend a semi-lonely life for forty years. The meaning of the word “isi” has a major impact and gives two very different interpretations of the she’r. If “isi” is taken to mean firaq himself, then … what a sorrowful, dark life firaq has had, but it is because of his power that we have a harvest of versification from every garden. If “isi” is taken to mean sorrow, then, it is the sorrow that inspires firaq to write such fruitful verse.
