کونسل کی ممبری کے لئے ووٹ چاہے گی

 

لڑکیوں کی تعلیم

لڑکیاں پڑھ رہی ہیں انگریزی

ڈھونڈ لی قوم نے فلاح کی راہ

۲

روِشِ مغربی ہے مدّ نظر

وضع مشرق کو جانتے ہیں گناہ

۳

یہ ڈراما دکھائے گا کیا سین

پردہ اُٹھنے کی منتظر ہے نگاہ

 

تعلیم کے نتائج

خوش تو ہیں ہم بھی جوانوں کی ترقّی سے مگر

لبِ خنداں سے نکل جاتی ہے فریاد بھی ساتھ

ہم سمجھتے تھے کہ لائے گی فراغت تعلیم

کیا خبر تھی کہ چلا آئے گا اِلحاد بھی ساتھ

گھر میں پرویز کے شیریں تو ہوئی جلوہ نما

لے کے آئی ہے مگر تیشۂ فرہاد بھی ساتھ

تخمِ دیگر بکف آریم و بکاریم زِ نو

کانچۂ کِشتیم زِ خجلت نتواں کرد درو

लढकियौं की तालीम

लढकियां पढ़ रही हैं अंग्रेज़ी

ढूंड ली क़ौम ने फ़लाह कि राह

रविश-ए मग़्रिबी है मद्द-ए नज़र

वज़’अ-ए मश्रिक़ को जानते हैं गुनाह

ये ड्रामा दिखाएगा क्या सीन

पर्दा उठने कि मुंतज़र है निगाह

 

तालीम के नताएज

ख़ुश तो हैं हम भी जवानौं कि तरक़्क़ि से मगर

लब-ए ख़न्दां से निकल जाती है फ़र्याद भी साथ

हम समझते थे के लाएगी फ़राग़त तालीम

क्या ख़बर थी के चला आएगा इल्हाद भी साथ

घर में परवेज़ के शीरीं तो हुई जल्वा-नुमा

ले के आई है मगर तीशा-ए फ़रहाद भी साथ

तुख़्म-ए दीगर बकफ़ आरीम ओ बकारीम ज़े नौ

क-अन-चे किश्तीम ज़े ख़िज्लत न-तवां कर्द दर-ऊ

This is a selection of three short pieces of iqbal buried towards the end in ‘baaNg-e daraa’ and probably swept under the carpet. He has also written a lot putting down reason as opposed to (blind) faith. In these pieces he derides western education as immoral and anti-religious, women coming out for careers instead of staying home and taking care of children, and even girls’ education. Is this a foretelling of the position that ‘taalibaan’ and ‘boko haraam’ would take?

It is only a matter of days, O man of senses be warned. You will lose your respect and women will come out in the open. Is he appealing to sense of ‘manhood’. Also see fahmida riaz’s ‘chaadar aur chaardivaari’.

The times are coming when (women) instead of wishing for children will ask you for a vote to get elected to the membership of the (legislative) council.

Sarcastic … the (muslim) community has discovered a path to progress. Girls are now getting educated in English.

Before their eyes are the ways of the west. They think that the traditions of the east are sinful.

lab-e-KhandaaN2 se nikal jaati hai faryaad3 bhi saath

iqbal claims to be happy that youth is making progress (through education, presumably English education). But even as the lips smile at their progress, a lament escapes through them …

kya Khabar3 thi ke chala aayega ilhaad4 bhi saath

I assume that while iqbal uses the word ‘atheism’ he really means lack of interest in religion. Youth who is getting ‘Western’ education is showing no interest in religion, he laments. How could we have known that along with this education, atheism would come along.

ghar meN parvez ke shiriN to hui jalwa-numa1
leke aaii hai magar teesha2-e farhaad bhi saath
1.manifest, displaying her beauty 2.pick axe
iqbal draws heavily from the legend of shiriN-farhaad but uses it in a very different way. Normally the story is used to admire the intense love and persistence of farhaad and his labour in using the pickaxe to carve out a river path. Here iqbal uses it as a metaphor for pestilence. Thus, shiriN brought the display of her beauty to the house of parvez (her husband) but along came the pestilence of farhaad’s love and his pickaxe. Here ‘western education’ is shiriN and ‘ilhaad/atheism’ is the pickaxe/teesha of farhaad.

tuKhm-e deegar bakaf aareem o bakaareem ze nau
ka-an-che kishteem ze Khijlat na-tawaaN kard daru
This is a quote from bedil. Get another seed in your hand and plant it anew. Gardening that is done with shame/embarrassment does not yield a healthy harvest.
