Click here for background and on any passage for word meanings and explanatory discussion. sahir ludhianavi (1921-1980) progressive poet writing in chaste yet relatively easily understood urdu. He brought the quality of urdu nazm to movie songs and raised the standards to a high level. Supported labour movements. This appears to be a purely romantic nazm with no social undertones and reflects the unfulfilled love relationships in sahir’s life. There is a (totally unsubstantiated) claim that sahir composed this as a tribute to lata maNgeshkar’s voice, at a time when relations between the two were not bitter. I cannot quite believe this, but upon lata maNgeshkar’s passing, I am quite willing to say that this nazm does reflect sentiments of tribute to a beautiful voice.
