رہ رہ کے پھر مچلنے لگی ہے شباب میں

رُسوائی کی ہوس دلِ خانہ خراب میں

بیداریٔ جنوں کے طفیل اِضطراب میں

ہر شب گذر رہی ہے تمنّائے خواب میں

ہے نشّۂ شرابِ محبّت شباب میں

کیفِ و سرور تیرے غمِ بے حساب میں

لازم ہے زندگی کے لئے دل کی روشنی

رکّھا ہے کیا علومِ حساب و کتاب میں

اِک عشرتِ حیات ہے اِک راحتِ ممات

بس اِس قدر ہے فرق گناہ و ثواب میں

وہ سوزِ انحطاط ہے، یہ سازِ انبساط

پیری کا ذکر چھیڑ نہ عہدِ شباب میں

ہے کینہ سوز اُس کا جمالِ نظر فروز

بغض و عناد غرق ہوئے ہیں شراب میں

رزّاقِ بے نیاز سے مانگا تھا وصلِ دوست

لیکن ملا ہے ذوقِ تجسُّس جواب میں

ज़ौक़-ए तजस्सुस जवाब में – क्रिष्ण मोहन लाल भाटिया मोहन

रह रह के फिर मचलने लगी है शबाब में

रुस्वाई की हवस दिल-ए ख़ाना-ख़राब में

बेदारी-ए जुनूं के तुफ़ैल इज़्तेराब में

हर शब गुज़र रही है तमन्ना-ए ख़्वाब में

है नश्शा-ए शराब-ए मोहब्बत शबाब में

कैफ़ ओ सुरूर तेरे ग़म-ए बे-हिसाब में

लाज़िम है ज़िन्दगी के लिये दिल कि रौश्नी

रक्खा है क्या उलूम-ए हिसाब ओ किताब में

एक इश्रत-ए हयात है एक राहत-ए ममात

बस इस क़दर है फ़र्क़ गुनाह ओ सवाब में

वो सोज़-ए इन्हतात है, ये साज़-ए इन्बसात

पीरि का ज़िक्र छेढ न अहद-ए शबाब में

है कीना-सोज़ उस का जमाल-ए नज़र फ़रोज़

बोग़्ज़ ओ ‘अनाद ग़र्क़ हुए हैं शराब में

रज़्ज़ाक़-ए बे-नियाज़ से मांगा था वस्ल-ए दोस्त

लैकिन मिला है ज़ौक़-ए तजस्सुस जवाब में

paida is dharti se hue haiN, faiz kaii, iqbal kaii
Editor of “aavaaz” at lucknow and dehli, and later in the Indian Government Revenue Department. There 28 books of collections of his nazm and Ghazal. One is named, ‘dil-e naadaaN’. Considering the date of publication of his book and historical markers in Ghalib’s life, I place this Ghazal in 1947.

rusvaaii3 ki havas4 dil-e Khaana-Kharaab5 meN

The poet/lover is young and daring, not caring for consequences. In his youth, lust for disrepute i.e. loss of reputation because he is mad in love, rises again and again in his fearless heart.

har shab5 guzar6 rahi hai tamanna7-e Khwaab8 meN

The poet/lover’s passion (either for romantic love or for the love of composing verse) is ‘awake/active’. Because of this he is restless and all night is spent yearning for sleep i.e. he is unable to sleep because of his passion.

kaif2 o suroor3 tere Gham4-e be-hisaab5 meN

The beloved has given immeasurable pain to the poet/lover. He is quite happy to have this ‘wealth’ i.e. he values the pain he gets. Because of this his youth is spent is the intoxication of the wine of love.

rakkha hai kya uloom4-e hisaab5 o kitaab6 meN

This is another one I have difficulty swallowing. (Blind) faith is necessary for a (good) life. What is there in worldly/material book knowledge!

bas is qadar5 hai farq6 gunaah o savaab7 meN    
1.pleasure 2.life (material) 3.comfort 4.death/after-life 5.this much 6.difference 7.blessing, virtue
The difference between sin/transgression and goodness/virtue is that the former might give you pleasure in this life but the latter is needed for comfort in your after-life.

piiri5 ka zikr6 chheR na ahd7-e shabaab8 meN

The poet/lover is young and considers youth to be the means of pleasure. He does not want to be reminded of coming old age because that is a painful decline.

boGhz4 o ‘anaad5 Gharq6 hue haiN sharaab meN

Poetic convention is that the poet/lover loves the torment visited upon him by the beloved and all her characteristics of cruelty are admired. Also, for something to be dipped in wine is to make it very tasty and desirable. Her glorious beauty that dazzles the eyes causes rivalry, vengefulness and enmity. It is as if all these characteristics are dipped in wine.

laikin mila hai zauq4-e tajassus5 javaab meN

This is a dynamic thought – ‘vasl’ is not the goal but ‘zauq-e tajassus’ is. I prayed for, asked god for granting me union with the beloved (getting me to my goal). In response, I received the desire to try (work for it myself) i.e. god considers this a better reward.
