युं तो दुश्मन भी बहुत देते हैं दाग़

तुम जो बख़्शो वो निशानी और है

और मेरे दिल को ग़म दे दीजिये

आंख में थोढा सा पानी और है

क्या सुनें वो मुझ से मेरा हाल-ए दिल

लुत्फ़ क़ासिद की ज़बानी और है

वो जो सुन’ने आये तो कहना पढा

मत सुनो मेरी कहानी और है

ख़ुल्द में रिज़्वां को कुछ भी लुत्फ़ हो

तेरे दर की पास्बानी और है

A collection of his Ghazal was published posthumously in 1982 by his shaagird. The book mentions beKhud dehlavi (1863-1955) as his ‘inspirational ustaad’ and dedicates it to him. He was a minor official in the dehli court system. In the book he describes his encounter with beKhud dehlavi when he (falak) was still a young man. The book says that he started composing in 1940. He has several Ghazal composed in the zamin of Ghalib, this is one of a series linked to the corresponding radeef in ‘Ghalib naqsh-e qadam’.

It is customary for the suffer to suffer in silence and not reveal his secret love for fear of maligning the beloved’s reputation i.e., of embarrassing the standards of love. Thus, I try that love not be embarrassed, but the world has decided something else i.e., they are spreading rumours about me and the beloved.

Even though enemies too inflict many wounds, but the wounds/scars you grant are something else.

Go ahead, cause me some more pain, torture me. There is still some water/tears left in the eyes. Here ‘aur hai’ is used more in the literal sense of ‘some more’.

Why should she listen to the story of the condition of my heart from me. The joy is hearing it from the messenger’s mouth is something else. This may be because she can ignore the story without feeling any remorse, or she can send back a stern response or perhaps even if she feels some sympathy she can hide it from the messenger.

mat suno meri kahaani aur hai   
The beloved has come to hear the sorry tale of the poet/lover but the story is so painful and so long that he himself is forced to say, ‘don’t listen to it anymore’.

The poet is paying tribute to the masters including to the ustaad (daaGh dehlavi) of his own ustaad (beKhud dehlavi). Thus, mir’s passionate soul expression and the high standards set by Ghalib as well as the colourful verse of daaGh are something else. The implication is ‘how can a newcomer like me dare to compete/compare.
