دنیائے محبت میں کہلائے جو دیوانہ

ہوں رِندِ خراباتی مشرب مرا رندانہ
بتخانہ ہو یا کعبہ ہر اک مرا مے خانہ

وہ ایک ہی مالک ہے اِن دونوں مکانوں کا

Initially, he used ‘maftoon’ as his taKhallus and then switched to ‘nadiim’. There is precious little by way of biographical notes but in the book that I have access to, there is reference to his rubaaii published in magazines from 1908-1912 and a note on the first volume of his diivaan about to be published. safi lakhnavi (1862-1950) is listed as his ustaad.

There is no doubt that in the eyes of love, only they are considered wise, who in the world of love are known as fools. This is talking about sufiyaana/universal love. In this field, there is no calculation of gain or loss. It has to be unquestioning love for its own sake. Blind love … which may be considered foolish. Only those who have such love can be considered wise.

The tavern is considered to be a liberal, open space, welcoming all equally. The wine in this she’r could easily be the wine of love … universal love in the sufi spirit. Thus, I am a patron of the tavern (universally welcoming place) and my faith is that of a lover of the wine of universal love. Be it the mosque or the temple they are both like a maiKhaana (tavern) to me.

It is the same owner of both houses. The kaa’ba belongs to him as does the temple.

O zaahid, experience some pleasure at least. Try a taste of wine, holding your tasbiih (prayer beads) in one hand and a cup of wine in the other.

ka’bah mere piichhe hai kaliisaa mere aage

tum se kahiN behtar4 hai dil-soKhta5 parvaana6 1.lovers 2.appropriate 3.lessons 4.better 5.burning heart, passionate 6.moth
The moth is considered to love the candle flame and it keeps circling it even at the risk of getting burnt to death. It is held up as the ideal lover. Thus, the poet calls upon all lovers to get lessons from the moth, passionately in love with the candle flame, because it is much better than them.
