The gathering of stars has been put to shame by the celebration of lights. The night, that now holds light in its daaman, enhances beauty. The scene of lightning is within the world of possibilities. The bright day has been put to shame; the sun is perplexed. The world has become an embodiment of light in the dark night.

Every house is a house of brilliance. Wherever you look brightness is self-evident; there is no need to describe. In the brilliance of light, all signs of darkness are lost. In whichever direction eyes are raised, it is the scene of the night of avadh (ayodhya). Today shrii raam returns from his exile in the forest. He returns in all his beauty like the full moon; why should there be not a garland of lamps around the city.

It is this day, an auspicious celebration, that lakshmii is worshipped, whose manifestation adds brilliance to brilliance. This night is the key to locked doors of the treasure (traditionally, in business households, accounts for the new business year are started after divaali). It is a renewal, a new beginning, every year of a cultural tradition. This night comes cast in the mould of light to polish and brighten the fate of humanity.
